I’m going to whack some new old ultegra (6650) cranks on my surly, but I’m missing the preload bolt. I know there’s a couple of different types but I’m not sure how they’re different. If I want a non-shimano plastic one, what should I be looking for? Can’t seem to find a compatible one.

not sure how they’re different.
Different threads, depending on the wall thickness of the axle. Can't remember the actual numbers but 6600/6650 is the normal road size so any generation 105/Ultegra/DA compatible parts will work. Look in my 464 thread for #tester_approved aluminium ones

Ok that makes sense - I’ll give one of the bolts you linked to a go. I know they’re fine, but the plastic ones wind me up and I resent the pointless proprietary tool.
Many thanks! -

Nothing really matches but it does the job well. I really want to paint it tho

Can't you just put a new axle in the existing hub?
What is it?

All stems are measured the same.
Nitto just use reach rather than extension.
Reach makes way more sense (imo).

Not sure I quite follow. My (level) Nitto quill stem is 11.5cm, measured from the center of the insert to the center of the clamp. It's advertised as 10cm in length. Surely that's weird?

Level as in 90 degrees to the quill part?

Level as in 90 degrees to the quill part?
Horizontal/parallel to the ground, is what I meant.

Then you're measuring wrong. Your headtube is (I'm guessing not at a right angle) to the ground.
You need to measure the distance between the straight line of your steerer/quill to an offset straight line that intersects your bar clamp. Which should equal 10cm (if my pygag is correct it'll be approx 5.67cm above or below where your bar clamp currently is).
EDIT: my pythag, not pygag.

Actually this explains it a bit better:
https://www.habcycles.com/fitting.htmlI'm probably a bit harsh is saying you're doing it 'wrong'. Its just for measuring 'nitto's way' would be to measure reach, not extension.
I assume other manufacturers also measure reach over extension but I've not measured all stems (just a few, which were all reach).

I see, interesting. Yes, then indeed I measured it wrong (extension instead of reach). Who knew Nitto know what they're doing!

Finally got my do-everything bike back from the LBS. After several years of abuse the only original parts remaining are the hydros and the frame (and the frame got crashed and carbon repaired).
Love this bike, now it needs mudguards, lights and a frame bag that fits the weird shape
