  • All this Moro talk made me think a visit was overdue, the comment from xander to judge it on the food and not the service puts me off. At the prices they charge the least you can expect is friendly and efficient service.

  • The service is friendly! but some reviews online all complain about how the service is too casual? Im not sure what that means. Perhaps over friendly? I dont know

  • that's all you can ask for, one thing that grinds my gears is a waiter that calls his guests "dudes"

on another note, had dinner at Cyrus Todiwala's latest venture, was surprised to see the man himself in the kitchen, couldn't fault the food.

Best cucumber raita in a long time, beetroot and mushroom thoran was also very nice.

  • I can't believe I haven't seen this thread until now! I god damn love food. mmmm, food.

  • Wagamama is generally pretty shit

  • ^^^Agreed. The word dude is punishable by death

  • as is 'guys'. usually accompanied by the patronising tablesquat.

fuck off you over familliar functionary, the tip is invariably included so why not just be your surly, underpaid, overworked, embittered self and bring me my dinner, i'll respect you more for it. i'll even leave you a cash tip if you promise not to wipe bogies in my avacado ritz.

  • and im afraid wagamamas is to asian food what halfords is to bikes.

  • as is 'guys'.** usually accompanied by the patronising tablesquat.**

    I fucking hate this.

I'm not proclaiming Wagamama's to be a culinary behemoth, but they have their shit in order and know what market they are aiming at, which was my mine gripe with Basuba.

Anyway new day and all that...

  • fair enough - ive not been to busaba, but i doubt i'll bother. it stands to reason that regional food gets watered down and mass marketed for western punters. i doubt 1000 year old duck egg congee is gonna fly off the pass, but i just wish they'd try a bit fucking harder. 'ping pong' is the worst offender.

  • So much rage on this forum. You should go here instead -

Very basic cafe interior but the food has always been excellent and is cheap too! The laksa is legendary, and very generous. :)

Ping pong can cock off. Dim sum should not be served in the evening, and it should be served from a trolley. go to New world.

C & R rocks my world, Malay food almost as good as my mothers although the Bayswater one isn't quite as good as the Soho one. For Malay cafe food, Makan on Portobello isn't bad either.

  • I like Makan, particularly the samosas and spring rolls. Cheap too.

  • someone would call me 'dude' and squat on my table..?!

    *produces roll of twenties

Makan (real value for money - especially the nasi campur), C&R (Soho) are both good, I'm sure you know of Rasa Sayang in Soho which is not bad either. But Paddington rules the roost for Malaysian food for me, Satay House, Tudkin and Delima are all nice, Bali Bali when in the West End is nice as well.

Going for a nasi goreng sayur NOW!

  • Best melanzane alla parmigiana I've ever made... Slow roasted some baby aubergines 'til they were almost crisps, halved some very ripe plum tomatoes and oven dried those bastards as well... A little bit of Napoli sauce, bocconcini, reggiano, ricotta and some more fried baby aubergine... 45 minutes in a slow oven and BANG!!!! A-ma-zing...

I agree with the W2 tip, although disagree with Satay house and Delima. Admittedly, partly for personal reasons, and mainly because I have high standards due to my foodie malay mother.

Delima had a high turnover of inadequate chefs, and have recently shut down. And I've just never really rated Satay house, having been there a fair few times over the last 15 - 20 years, it's just too expensive and too hit and miss for my liking.

I'm being taken to www.awana.co.uk next week, and look forward to it having not been there, as it would normally be a bit pricey for me.

  • I walked past it a couple of weeks ago, didn't go in as I'd never heard of it before and it was virtually empty on a Saturday evening (albeit early evening). Let me know how you get on.

AFAIK Delima is still in business, and as for Satay House we'll have to agree to disagree, although of late the heat seems to have vanished from their dishes. I was speaking to the owner last week and she mentioned they're bringing back old favourites that people kept ordering and were no longer on the menu.

  • Pretty sure Delima's closed, just asked my mum, she lives on the same street, apparently it was only about a week ago.

I guess I'll give Satay house another chance at some point, oh and Tukdin on craven street is pretty good too.

Good work, looks awesome. Must make this soon!

  • making adventurous pre-xmas food tonight, not sure whether it'll work.
will post pics if it does..

  • Beef shin and red wine with loads of mushroom and carrot have been slowly cooking for two hours, now ready to grace my new pie dish...

    Can't wait

  • I have the meat sweats. Turned out pretty well tho.

Roasted carrots, spuds, nips and celeriac (goose fat of course)

    Roasted walnut and bacon stuffing

Turkey breast stuffed with a mixture of chopped chorizo, celery, shallots and breadcrumbs, wrapped in pancetta

    Altogether

We're both a bit bacon'd out now. I will be bringing a large piece of bacon cake to souths tomorrow for Hillbilly, we've created a monster.
