  • looks tasty. still yet to get there - that place is open less often than anne widdecombes legs.

This has put me off food for today, thanks...

  • on a side note - went to lisboa grill nee the gallery - brixton hill - last night on this very forums reccommendation - cocking awesome it was - fish stew thing and chicken, best i've ever had. and they didnt charge me for a wine top-up. go there! run - don't walk!

There was a review of the Gallery/Lisboa Grill by Jay Rayner in Olive magazine this month, he likes it a lot, best £10 eat in London, gets a take-away every other week apparently. LFGSS = way ahead of the crowd.

  • ugh fkn jay rayner. king of uppity foodie douchammers.

but yes - it is especially good. had the fish stew with rice last time we went there - was more than enough for two. maes you wonder howe they turn a profit.

  • Need to go there. Address please?

  • Lisboa Grill
    256A Brixton Hill SW2 1HF

  • Might be the perfect place for Thursday.

  • garlic and oregano bread, just rising in my room!
    mmmm

  • Lunch - 2cm thick slices of salt beef, gherkins, English mustard, mayonnaise, granary bap. Could have eaten 3.

  • Where from? Sounds like heaven right now. I'm ridiculously hungry.

I really need to start eating more sensible portions. I had a flask of vegetable soup I made last night for...elevensies. Then followed by a whole baguette with salami, artichokes, olives and pecorino from the new italian deli on fakenwell road. Then 2 nata with a coffee.

Also, on the subject - that deli is absolutely awesome - it's on the south side of the road between Magma and Leather Lane/The Magic Shop. So so cheap but amazing quality and decent portion sizes - plus really nice guys. Their coffee is nothing special but their food is top.

  • Furnival Street - either Cooper's, or the place next door. The salt-beef is always in the window anyhow, and it's killer. It's right by the Sainsbury's headquarters. Family run place.

Rode past that deli the other day. Will give it a go. Can't resist salami, olives, cheese, or well made sandwiches.

  • Back end of term means, its cheese and beans on toast, with a side of reggae reggae couscous. Yesterdays vegetable biryani seems a long way away!

  • Rode past that deli the other day. Will give it a go. Can't resist salami, olives, cheese, or well made sandwiches.

They do a fairly substantial individual Focaccia (reaallly good, salty and oily) with pretty much whatever filling you want for about 3/3.50 which when you taste it pisses all over anything else locally.

It's an odd place - it's a huge space inside and it seems, to be honest, a little sparse - they have the savoury deli counter on the left, the wine rack behind that, a seating area in the middle, then coffee and pastries on the right. There are signs up saying - "apologies for it being empty/stock still coming in" etc. but the huge ceilings just make it seem a bit barren, even with full fridges.

The three of them don't seem to cope too well at the moment with queues but it's only been open a week and if you go early (to guarantee to get your choice of bread rather than just taking what's left) then you're in for a treat.

    Definitely recommend it.

  • bread was goooooood!
first time baking, what a pile of piss:
in case you want the recipe:
    500g flour,
    2tsp salt
    3tbsp olive oil
    300ml water
handful of oregano, basil and couple of grinds of tesco's garlic lover's grinder.
    leave to prove and bake.

mmmm bready smell in flat = win.

ate it with Steak and Kidney Casserole I made last week and froze, so tasty. mmmmm

(not on my diet- but need to empty the flat of food before leaving it for christmas and I have tonnes of food frozen)

  • Just had a proper chicken soup - used some actually chicken stock I made last week. Sweated off some onions, garlic and mushrooms, finely sliced some chicken breast, cooked for a couple of mins then added white wine. Let the alcohol burn off then added the stock. Seasoned then done.
    Take that winter cold!

  • lovely stuff there ^

makeshift leftover odds and ends tea tonight. roasted three big portobello mushrooms and a little onion with a bit of olive oil, lots of garlic and thyme. made mash with the last few spuds mashed in a couple of handfuls of spinach at the last minute, ate it with the caramelised onions and garlicky mushrooms balanced on top masterchef style. not bad with a glass of rioja.

  • What kind of time do you bastards leave work? I've only just got home and this is early for me.

Reheating my vegetable overkill soup I made at about midnight last night.

Needed to get rid of some vegetables that were looking like they were on the way out:

    Some potatoes
    Carrots
    A turnip
    A couple of parsnips
    Some onions
    Shallots
    Runner Beans
    Portobello mushrooms
    some posh streaky bacon
A couple of cans of chopped tomato
butter, olive oil, garlic, couple of herbs and spices

Way too much stuff to be sensible and should really have made a few different kinds but sod it.

I now have enough soup for every day this week - lunch and dinner (But naturally I'll still get cakes/sandwiches/fat)

  • student.

  • ^ Me also, soon to be obliterated by 3 dissertations though, so enjoying relative easyness of life whilst I can.

  • revision time for me currently for the next month.
preparing food for the entire week in an evening tonight, because I'm knackered and don't want to work.

  • I would be well up for doing an MA right now.

If by 'right now' I could go back thirty years to when it was financially viable.

  • Was thinking of an MA/re-training and doing an architecture degree, but can't be doing that. Gonna run for student president instead, keep the student-ish dream going that little bit longer. Plus it pays!

  • I'm doing an MA now. Need to get back into the swing of academic writing. What did you mean by having 3 dissertations?

  • Well to be precise: an (original) research project. and two dissertations, one on European Politics and Policy and one on a Business and Management topic previously studied. 12k, 8k and 8k respectively.

  • Does anyone have a good recipe for a killer Xmas Cake?

  • Bit late for Christmas cake, no? Should have been maturing for a month with regular top-ups of boooooze!

Made a cracker last year, not this year though - my girlfriend doesn't like raisins or sultanas or currants. Crazy
