indonesian food is awesome. hate to get all barak obama on your asses but indonesian street food like bakso (soup with dumlpings) and chicken satay with peanut and chilli sauce and slices of sticky rice cut from a rolled up banana leaf are some of my favourite eating experiences of all time.

and of course gado gado is one of the weirdest and wonderfullest inventions of all. might make that tonight actually.
-
• #3686
if you're not familiar with gado gado it is basicaly exactly what it look like: a big pile of steamed vegatables (cabbage, carrots, sometimes a few potatoes or green beans), some salad (lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber) sometimes tofu, always a hard boiled egg or two and the whole thing covered in a salty, sticky, sweet peanut sauce.
serve with hot chilli sauce and steamed rice on the side.
not exactly sophisticated and pretty weird, but it works.

Dooks - You been to Bali Bali or Satay House at all? If not try it, you won't be disappointed. Makan on Portobello Rd is good as well.

+1 to Makan – lovely spring rolls and samosas. Really friendly staff too.
Hell, +1 to food.

@jaw, i've been to a little balinese place up near kentish town ages ago. seem to recall it being good. i'm always loathe to pay restaurant prices for indonesian food because of the association i have of it being so cheap. silly really cos i'm happy to pay uk prices for indian and sri lankan curries which would cost no more than a quid or so in their native environment.
i suppose the thing about "real" indo food is that it's definitely not in the realms of fine dining, it's just a cheap way of getting tasty protein and carbs into yourself. i mean, the national dishes are basically "left over rice, re-fried with whatever else is kicking about, served in newspaper with a fried egg on top" (nasi goreng) and "a big pile of steamed vegetables, eggs and rice with peanut sauce on it" (gado gado). both kind of wrong, but so, so good.
man. now i am hungry.

I always find this with Pad Thai, you'll pay up to £12 in a decent Thai restaurant in the Uk, or you could pay 10TBH or 15TBH with egg if you get it from a street seller in thailand.

yep. ahhh, the pains of being male, middle class and white, living in one of the most prosperous and expensive cities on earth eh?
-
• #3695
Indonesian/Malay food is cheap and tasty, even at Satay House you can have dinner for 2 with starters + main courses and a few beers for less then £40. Not cheap but definitely better value then your average Chinese/Indian.
Fuck I fancy some nasi goreng now, fried egg on top and lots of sambal, washed down with either a Bintang or a Happy Soda™

• #3696
Ahhh yes indeed. Can almost smell the incence, clove cigarettes and satay cooking on the coconut husk barbeque now.

Brave wants fig cake
I am eating mi goreng instant noodles. This particular variety (Indomie) has been recently withdrawn from sale here as it has excessive levels of Benzoic acid and E128. I've been eating it for years so I figure the last 2 packs aren't going to suddenly fuck me up.
Also, I am a big fan of E128.
