  • On the subject of 'fish'...... thoughts on the best place to source fish in town!?

I like to get my meat from McKanna's on Theobalds...... but fish.... more of an issue if you rule out a supermarket.....

Steve Hatt on Essex Road ftw!

  • there's great fishmonger on essex road at the bottom of cross street. best i've come across in london. super fresh, great variety and very reasonable. the queue is out of the door all day on saturday.

and applesomethingorother in (in the row of shops along the western end of) borough market is very very good too. expensive though.

  • Yep... that Essex rd joint. Or Billingsgate.

  • True. It's a strange one, this, and depends on the much-accepted 'definition' of vegetarianism as 'abstinence from meat' when the correct definition is something like 'abstinence from animal flesh'. People take the former definition literally and conclude (probably correctly, as the flesh of fish isn't normally referred to as 'meat') that fish does not fall under it. There are a couple of possible terms for people who abstain from meat but not from fish: 'pesco-vegetarian' or 'pescetarian'. Anyway, I'm sure Henry knows all this. It's just sometimes worth re-iterating.

Oliver, don't get me started on the pescetarian thing again....

Anyway - off to Hoo Hing* later. Stocking up on wok-aliclous stuff.

    • Yes, I know. It sounds like a euphemism.
  • BTW, Henry, I love you, but the only thing that annoys me more than a vegetarian is a "vegetarian" who eats fish.

You are not vegetarians, you are health concerned omnivores.

Somewhat of a contradiction there. Surely "health concerned omnivores" would be consuming a fairly large quantity of meat?

  • I was under the assumption that many people gave up eating meat for health reasons, sorry if I missed something.

  • I was under the impression it was nearly always an ethical or a religious issue.

I have never met a health related vegetarian before.

  • I fnckin did it.

    Pieceumble ftw!

Was a bit of a botch job as I was staying at a mates house somewhere in the county side so I just made do with what I could find in the cupboard, and used pastry that they had made and frozen, there wasn't quite enough butter pastry or apple involved but I know for sure this bad boy has legs!

  • Any pics?!

  • I was under the impression it was nearly always an ethical or a religious issue.

I have never met a health related vegetarian before.

No, Nhatt is right. There are loads of pescetarians and vegetarians for health reasons, certainly in London. Perhaps it's different where you live?

  • And even more specifially, I think Henry is one of them, Judging by what he has said on here.

  • nhatt is, as usual, right.
But- my gf would be a vegetarian, but when she was a kid, she had some health issues after turning vegan, and the doctor advised her that fish would be important in her diet.

Whilst I have no doubt that a vitamin/ mineral pill could help her, I have no idea- and neither does she anymore, exactly which vitamin is required.

I suppose I will call myself a pescetarian.
    so there!

Incidentally, it has been often noted that upon a food allergy arising, a return to the 'Iron Age diet' can alleviate the food allergy somewhat after a while- and is very, very healthy-

The Iron Age diet being, copious amounts of meat, and raw berries and vegetables that were easily scavangeable.

Take lots of nice fresh veg.
chuck in wok with hot oil in it.
    pour in copious soy sauce.
add dried chilli and some sugar.
cook until all veg is just beginning to be softened.
pour off excess soy sauce so dish is near dry.
chuck in 2 eggs. and mix.
serve when egg is thoroughly mixed and cooked.

    mmmmmm mmmmm.
    time to make- 7-10 mins.
    delish and healthy.

  • No-churn Ice Cream

    • 200 g condensed milk
    • 200 g natural yoghurt
    • 200 g double cream
    • berries

Mix the condensed milk, yoghurt and double cream together, and whisk until super-stiff. Fold in the fruit and freeze in a shallow tin/container for about an hour, then its ready to eat.

  • Jesus konijn... is that yours????

    Raising the bar.

  • Yep, had some after dinner. It looked prettier in the tin, all swirly and rippled, I should have taken the photo then, but couldn't wait to taste it. For fake ice cream it is pretty good.

  • want ice cream

  • I went on the great Yorkshire Cherry Raid yesterday.

I built a device specifically for scrumping.

It consisted of one of these:

    a length of this:

and a large portion of stealth.

I call the device the ACME Plunderer®

    The end result? These:

    it is now cherry jam.

    The next mission is tomorrow.

The cherries will go to make pies.

  • GL, that is awesome!!!

    Portuguese food!
    https://www.lfgss.com/thread45058-2.html#post1513870

  • Mmmmm, sheep anus

I'd personally do it with a bit of butter, garlic and toasted pine nuts on top

I'd do it in long grass with velcro gloves.

    Ha, repped!

  • I've heard that the fish monger in Brixton is awesome, but I am not an athority on the subject.

I use the fella on Atlantic Rd underneath the train station. Spot on

  • My friends are organizing this amazing get-together.
For those into some friday night lovely time.

did you hear that programme on R4 earlier this week, an episode of the food show called "pop up london". it was all about exactly this sort of thing.

    loving the ACME pluderer!

  • The plump, vulnerable fruit quivers with fear on the bough.

Warm wind sighs through the laden foliage, a sigh of loss, of regret, for it knows what is to come.

The sun dips, shadows creep from valley and fell, the landowner dozes unsuspectingly on his porch.

Tyres crack across cherry pips and fallen twigs.

If fruit could scream, the neglected orchards would resound with a cry not heard since Herrod slew the innocents.

Instead, heavy silence prevails as The Plunderer goes about his dastardly business.

    A swish amongst the branches.

A muted rattle of cherries cascading into the gaping maw of a ready mussette.

So few minutes to wreak such destruction!

As softly as he came, The Plundered withdraws, winking red lights and weaving tyre tracks his calling card, empty boughs his legacy.

    And what of the fruit?

Nought shall be found, save for sticky traces and sweet smears across the plump cheeks oh The Plunderers young brood.

The second raid is on tonight.

    No fruit tree is safe!

  • We wouldn't want to lose out on some useful information now, would we?

Less is more when it comes to pizza.

Base, tomato sauce, asparagus, prociutto. Pizza for the ages.

    • Lemon zest and sea salt

However I have been making mine lately with an aubergine pesto base instead.

I think we all know where you can stick that asparagus.

I always knew this moment would come.

    You're dead to me.

Tender asparagus prepared correctly is fucking marvellous.

    I agree, 100%.

    But - On a pizza?

Delivered by a person on a recumbent bicycle no doubt.

    Asparagus = win.

Asparagus on pizza = epic fail.

    That is all.

Green asparagus is inferior to white asparagus. Far more work to prevent it from going green but it's worth it.

The single best pizza the city can produce is the one I described above from Il Bacio in Stoke Newington. Every other pizza I've had here has been a soggy, fat, doughy affair with fuckloads of cheese. Sort it out, you lot! And do something about the fish and chips while you're at it.

Actually, I had some lovely fish and chips at the narrow in Wapping last week.

I had awesome fish and chips last night. From The Big Catch in Beckenham if anyone is interested.

You only went there as it is one letter away from being your forum name in Italian.

    Il Bacio -> Il Balcio

    Admit it.

i had some awesome pizza in malta. and some wicked bruschetta in gozo.

Not as good as they once were though as they changed their flour supplier apparently.

i was going to say, why aren't we bigging up LFGSS's own pizza spot?

    Money for old rope, pizza.

    Dough + air
    Tomato sauce = one tablespoonful
three slices of a dodgy salami
    a sprinkle of crap cheese

    That'll be ten pounds please!

    cynic.

base pizza on essex road also rules. my 2p...

    i've always found
[url=http://www.tipped.co.uk/listings/223866/icco-pizza] ICCO on Goodge street](http://www.dattefoco.co.uk/#) ludicrously tasty.
