  • much of a muchness but probably viet grill

  • Mien Tay!! Hot and sour soup is a must, really good summer rolls, whole grilled fish is good there, good veggie selection too.

  • I like Mien Tay too. Tried a few but my gf and I are in agreement.

I went to Cyclo recently, their Banh Mi was nice, but pricey, and takeaway only. I'd avoid.

  • Unless you want a Banh Mi to takeaway, because then I wouldn't avoid that place.

  • Ace, thanks. Mien Tay or Viet Grill it is (whichever I walk past first/ has a table)

  • +1 Mien Tai best meal,

song qui (?) was the best pho i had on kingsland road tho

  • Went to Bird on Sunday, new one on Kingsland Rd, TOO TOO slick, looks really expensively done, not in a good way IMO, I don't mean that I want Meatliqor (ugh), but the Red Dog sandwich place would be a good example of smart without feeling like an IKEA showroom. Food was ridic, well, what I had was, massive lumps of fried chicken with cheese and bacon in between two waffles. Chicken was good but batter was greasy and not as nice as Chicken Cottage. The real revelation was the waffles, I've only ever had dry, cardboardy supermarket ones, or light, tasteless gofres in Spain, these was dense, moist and batter-y, can't wait to have more fresh waffles.

Will go back for this ridiculous plate of carbs, but probably on my own because I'm a naughty naughty glutton.

  • Need some advice please guys. I've started gyming it again so eating pasta+chicken 3x a day.

I'm finding taking a tub of cold chicken and pasta to work everyday a little boring. I'm just putting the pasta and chicken straight into the tub the night before. Next morning it's all soggy and horrid, what can I do to avoid this? Also wanting to possibly increase the taste of both chicken and pasta? Looking to bulk up so not too bothered about the calorie count, just something a little tastier!

  • I went on Saturday.

Got the whole chicken - in buffalo sauce with blue cheese dip. Was very fucking good but a little pricey £24.

The fries and slaw were utterly useless.
The feel of the place I agree was totally off - I think there aren't enough tables.

  • Crispy - I have an overnight yeasted waffle batter recipe I can share. You'll need a waffle iron though.

I tend to open the chicken breast packet and move them all into a zippy bag and pour in some spices (I use this http://www.souschef.co.uk/chilean-spice-blend.html) and shake them around in the bag, then leave in the fridge for a bit before cooking them over the next few days, adds more flavour to the chicken and works for me

I have a few different spice blends from sous chef and all have been decent, you can probably make your own cheaper though

No blue waffle iron, but would happily accept any recommendations for waffles in London

Are you avoiding sauces of any kind and just eating grilled chicken and boiled pasta?

I'd get some Chicken thighs, marinade and roast or slow cook in any variety of sauce. Chicken breast is difficult to keep nice and moist at any time, yet alone the method you're talking about.

Minced chicken has a high protein content, so you could make burgers/patties/kebabs and warm these through easily enough and its easier to keep moist/add flavour than a breast.

A salad nicoise with Quinoa could also be a good option (egg, tuna and quinoa for protein)

  • Tuna and sardines are also good, but if you insist on eating chicken. Rogan's tip is a good one, then try with different marinades. There are millions out there, here are two easy ones:

    Spicy one:
    for 2 breat filets
    2 cloves garlic
    1 spanish red pepper
    salt, black pepper, olive oil
-process garlic and spanish pepper in (wooden) mortar & pestle

    Indonesian:
    ketjap manis
    dark soy sauce
    5 spice powder
    ginger powder
    black pepper, oil
optional: some garlic, chilli powder and sambal oelek

If you havent already, consider purchasing a grill or grill pan.

Still I'd recommend variation in your diet. I love chicken with all my heart, but I do eat other stuff sometimes.
I like a simple pasta & tuna salad:
    tomato
    cucumber
spinach in stead of lettuce (much iron, good for Popeye result)
    pickled gherkins
    can of tuna
cold rinsed pasta (I like farfalle in salads)
    salt, pepper, vinegar, olive oil
optional: any vegetable or even fruit you like, boiled eggs
optional2: splash of sauce or dressing like mayonnaise or cocktail sauce

  • Something like this http://www.emilybites.com/2012/08/shredded-mexican-chicken.html

Along with brown rice would be a good way to mix it up and it stays pleasant to eat as leftovers (In fact the chicken often starts out as leftovers for that kind of thing). NOTE: I haven't tried that particular recipe, but mexican shredded chicken in general is totally good.

  • Shredded chicken in tomato chipotle sauce is also called 'tinga de pollo'. I vouch for it being good. This is probably a more trustworthy recipe source: http://www.fronterafiesta.com/cook/tacos-enchiladas-tamales-tostadas/30-chipotle-chicken-tinga-tacos Of course you can just make the tinga and eat it in a non-taco environment.

You would have to substitute the salsa for chopped chipotle peppers in adobo which comes in cans. I think you can get it at sainsbury's or waitrose or for sure any mexican specialty place. The cilantro for garnish is the same thing as 'coriander' if that helps.

  • Really into pickled eggs at the moment. I strongly recommend you try the pickled eggs they have at the Cheshire Cheese, quality stuff.

  • gross

  • ^^ Have you had these: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_egg ? I really like them.

These https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_egg OTOH have a distinct odour that puts me off. I feel like if I could only get past it I might find something delicious, but for now they are in the category of taiwanese stinky tofu: Probably-delicious foods that have bested me.

  • a pickled egg rolled in an open packet of pickled onion monster munch.

    life changing

  • century eggs are traditionally eaten with congee which goes a long way to disguising their utterly repulsive taste.

seriously, what the hell is wrong with chinese people?

So you've had a Manchester egg...

  • your a manchester egg.

  • You'll be eating balut soon if youre going down the tea egg and century egg road. I'll just stick with plain boiled eggs, thank you.
