1000% agreed. Got a half fillet for Christmas brunch at my parents and it went down a treat so I hear. I miss it!
Stumbled across a new weekly (every sat and sun) market in st giles square behind TCR today. Amongst the stalls was one from Hansen-Lydersen.
I've been meaning to try their salmon for a while (for those who don't know, he's a slightly mad norwegian bloke who lives in N16 and smokes his own salmon to his grandfathers recipe) but the idea of forking out 70 quid for a side put me off.
http://www.nowness.com/day/2012/7/13/2289/salmon-smoker
The stall sells 100g for a fiver. Quite pricey i guess but not exactly out of reach.
It is without doubt the finest cold-smoked salmon i've ever had. Ever.
They also sell little bruschetta type things with a slice of nice bread, some neals yard creme fraiche and a sprig of dill for 2.50.
With my 100g, I ate a third on the bus, a third with poached eggs, a toasted buttered muffin and some chives. And the last third just now with tagliatelle, watercress, creme fraiche and lemon juice.
It's simply unreal. To the extent I'm thinking about going back tomorrow.
It was the first day for the market today so it was quite quiet. Mostly cake stalls but there was also a cider stall, a chutney stall, cheese, sausages, bread.

Recently I've started to feel very unhealthy. And to be fair my diet hardly ever contains fruit or veg in large quantities. Can people point me in a couple of basic and easy vegetarian meals other than stir frys? Most of my meals do contain red meat, so is fish a good substitute?

Why not try and acomodate fruit and vegetables into your whole day?
It will be easier for you, rather than trying to cram everything into one meal.
Jamie oliver and HFW have both had series on veg which you should check out.
Spaghetti bolognese can be an easy way of smashing the amount of veg you need,.
Think about the rest of the components of a good and healthy diet, which will play a big part in how good you feel. -

Ill be sure to watch both series, tah for them. And as regards eating fruit and veg throughout the day i think would be pretty tricky. Unless the fruits are dried such as apricots or raisins i find them slightly unpalatable compared to vegetables such as carrots, and peppers. Half of it is me probably needing to be less fussy though. Saying that though, when hot, i can eat most fruit and veg.

Oliver, you can't beat veggie curry.
Loads of easy recipes out there (even the Hairy Bikers are at it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/saag_aloo_with_roasted_95304) and Das Sreedharan (co-owner of Rasa) is a genius: [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fresh-Flavours-India-Sivadas-Sreedharan/dp/1840912871/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1342480301&sr=1-2"]Fresh Flavours of India: Amazon.co.uk: Sivadas Sreedharan, David Loftus: Books[/ame]
Mr Schick will concur.
Often, if the list of ingredients is daunting, you can just make a load of spice paste/mix and store it somewhere cool for the next time.

brilliant. Thanks missmouse, Ill see if the local waterstones stock it. Curry does seem to be a sounds option as they are possibly my favourite meals. If it has rice, ill be sure to like it. Im an utter noob to cooking if I'm honest, so i apologise. Are there health benefits from swapping white rice to brown rice?
-

Oh yes, apart from being really lovely and nutty in flavour, brown (or wholegrain) rice (which is white rice with all the best parts left on) contains: fibre, proteins, thiamine, calcium, magnesium and potassium and more.
You should make a vat of dahl too to eat with your curry and rice. Honest comfort food :)

Personally I find his stuff slightly overwrought for some reason. It comes across as lots of work for "simple" food, more contrived rather than effortless. Not sure why.

90% of the indian food is vegetarian because we have sun there to grow vegetables :P meat is expensive (any kind) which is exactly the opposite here most times. When I am in india I turn into a vegetarian only for the fact that there is so much variety of fruits and veggies out there, eating meat is just boring (and you dont get good meat except fish which is considered meat in india). But in here I am a carnivore's carnivore.

I went to India in November and was a vegetarian for two weeks. As amey says, fish is considered to be a meat and the tandoori blue marlin that I ate was magnificent.

I think what I like is the combinations of spices and herbs plus all those interesting ingredients. Vegetable p*rn if you like.
But have to say, when L&W went to their restaurant the other week, it was so over-salted, and that really spoiled it! -
