I'm confused about this. Do you really object to a left turning car (or motorbike) hugging the left side of the road at lights? Why? That's what they are taught to do, specifically in order that a cyclist doesn't take the inside and then crash into a left-turning car.
I always do that. I absolutely want you to pass me on the right if I'm about to turn left, because then I know you're safe and I know I'm safe.
I object because this often happens at red lights. As in the light is red but some car driver sees fit to overtake me, then hugs the curb so close that I have to take the high side. You are right in one sense, if a vehicle is specifically turning left then it's OK that they would not provide me with space on the left. Often though they are going straight and yet do the same thing.
Personally, I am very careful and would never pass on the left a vehicle that was actually signalling to turn left. However, a lot of drivers that are planning to go straight simply overtake and then close the gaps for cyclists. It even happens at ped crossings when there is no opportunity to turn. The car simply comes in front and then stops, blocking my path.

and a licence. and insurance. and an MOT. and lights. and seatbelt/helmet.
and only have privilege to use the road, cyclists are allowed to.

We're here because we love bikes, not because we hate motorcycles.
Amen to that.
As a newbie (hello all), I risk a massive lynching here. But I love all things two wheels and ride bicycles and motorbikes. I'll often use bus lanes in town.
I'm uber considerate in town, but I don't want to sit in traffic. Much like everyone else. Whenever you're on two wheels, you know full well that any conflict could be painful/expensive/embarrassing. I've never experienced conflict with bicycles and I don't expect to. Likewise, I've never experienced it from a motorbike when I've been on the pushrod. Maybe I've been lucky.
Were all in it together. Peace all...

+1.
Mbikes are your friend. Motorcyclists are uber familiar with the concept of 'sorry mate, didn't see you'

Ah right, confusion cleared up. Yes, overtaking you just to stop and go straight is complete arsehattery. My particular bugbear is overtaking you just to turn left in front of you.
But don't trust a car's indicators or lack of them to give you any indication of the driver's intent. BMWs in particular always seem to have malfunctioning ones :-) Oh and motorbike indicators don't cancel. Even good experienced riders sometimes forget to turn them off.

I don't :) I was at the lights coming off London Bridge today, a car stopped in the left lane - even though that lane is for going left only, didn't indicate, then when the lights went from left only to green cut across me (I was in the middle lane). I had anticipated this since stopping in the left lane is a pretty stupid thing to do to begin with, so I let the bugger go.

related slightly
yesterday on the old kent road a motorcyclist riding one handed tried to overtake/pass me on the inside. i didnt allow them to do it and as they continued up the road i noticed why they were riding with one hand ............. he was holding a lit cigarette! i caught up with him at the next set of traffic lights as he was puffing away (full face helmet with the visor up) and put my bicycle across his path and asked him to put his cigarette out and have a bit more consideration for other road users (or words to that effect)
the lights changed to green and he just moaned out loudly "what you doing" and sped around me clipping the kerb but staying upright.
sadly i couldnt find a police officer. surely its some kind of offence to ride a motorcycle and smoke even though its not to do the same and drive a car - not yet anyway.sorry if i missed something.

Poor behaviour on any account. Hopefully, he wasn't going too quickly.
I suppose people smoke in cars all the time, too--is there anything against that?
I can't recall if the HC says anything about that.

fucking motorcyclists. the number of times recently I've almost been clipped by some neurotic biker and had the classic hgv response: "well next time I'll kill you and then you won't be laughing and I won't give a fuck"
scum.

Most are ok, some are cunts. Much like cyclists, drivers, bus drivers, truck drivers, your parents, your sisters, frogs, squirrels and sweet potatos.
-
• #338
Don't get me started on sweet potatoes. Fucking tubers.
+1 to everything else you said though Hippy.
-
• #339
I think there is a higher proportion of cunts in cyclist than motor cyclist to be honest.

saw some research (unpublished) and the basic conclusion of road users was that everybody hates everybody on the roads in london. also heard from the results of motorcycles in bus lanes 'trial' was that it is a good thing. i've actually been surprised and it's not as bad as i thought, though i still hate the noise and emissions of the big ones.

That's true. I always love witnessing a bit of driver-on-driver aggro.

i'd agree there, the self righteous level is off the scale in a lot of cases. you have two camps.
camp one is afraid to be on the road, camp two fucking owns it and knows how it should be ruled! -

really? because every single motorcyclist I've got in any kind of altercation with has acted like a child...bar none! whereas most cyclist will back down when they realise they're wrong...or that they're dealing with a reasonable person.

Risking a flaming perhaps, but save for the occasional twit on a scooter, this appears to have been a success.
