On reflection I'm sure someone has to be there to indicate that the Russians couldn't swing up but that was the most edge of the seat moment of the Olympics so far.
Instant eight man death scenario.
Poor old Cav, looks like his sportsman of the year award is not in the bag.

They ring a bell when a team has been caught. Problem with that scenario was they hadn't actually completed a pass yet. Plenty of time for a lactic-brained rider to swing up without thinking. Unlikely, but certainly possible.

That competition is way over-rated but with the number of contenders from cycling, the sport may actually get a look-in this year.
Bet they give it to that driver bloke anyway.

At least the Netherlands have a pretty good excuse for being eliminated:-
"Niki Terpstra of the Netherlands was cycling with his team-mates to the Laoshan Velodrome Sunday morning for the qualifications for the team pursuit. In front of Terpstra, Robert Slippens suddenly had to dodge a car, and Terpstra ended up going down into the Beijing traffic. He suffered fractures of both lower arms.
The 24 year-old was immediately taken to a local hospital, where the fractures were diagnosed. He also had stitches in an open wound on his chin."
Ouch.
