  • I will be listing my Ricoh GR1v in the classifieds at some point when I find time. Until then, feel free to PM me if you're interested. It's in very good condition with original slip case.

  • Hi people,

Can anyone recommend a good repair shop in London for vintage cameras?
I've got a real old 16mm video camera I want to try and get repaired for a project I'm working on.

I've found a couple of places that are possibles but any recommendations?

  • Sendeans

  • Got an Olympus OM-1 on tuesday. Nicest camera i've ever used - just can't put it down! the brass showing through at the corners makes it feel like an old friend already. And that viewfinder!

  • The OM1 is a total beaut. I love how simple it is and it really made learning the fundamentals easy for me.

Need to shoot on mine more tbh.

  • Viewfinder in old SLR are always amazing, even the Canon 5D can't match it.

  • Stu F, the OM-1 was my favourite camera ever. I've recommended this a few times on this thread, but if you get the chance to get the Elicar 90mm f2.5mm Macro lens. rip the sellers arm off to get it. An astounding lens for portraits or macro. Win-win. Google it and you'll see what I'm talking about.

  • My uncle is a dentist and he gave me an om-2 with a ridiculous 105mm macro lens and a ring flash that he used to use for work when he went digital. Absolutely incredible!

I'm not familiar with 16mm video. Sure its not 1/2" (such as the old Sony PortaPac)? 3/4" I don't think even was used in reel-to-reel--- 1/2" (PortaPac), 1" (VTR), 2" (Quad) were, I think, the main standards.

Or do you perhaps mean a 16mm cine camera-- film as image storage and not magnetic tape?

I've found a couple of places that are possibles but any recommendations?

Depends really on what it is.. Unless you have old tapes you want to watch--- and you dig deeper you should check if the tapes are still OK given that many magnetic tapes of that era used urethane binders and suffer horribly from "sticky shed syndrome". I don't think its worthwhile, for example, to try to have someone repair an old PortaPac as it can be quite complicated (expensive)--- its cool enough as a "show and tell" working or not.

If its a cine camera.. Depends upon what camera... and the model..

Once I know what you have I can probably send you off in the right direction....
Perhaps while we're at it.... might be good to describe also what is wrong..

  • My favorite 6x6

    Rolleicord V/Va/Vb

    My favorite 35mm rangefinder camera:
    Robot Royal 36

My favorite scale focus 35mm cameras

    Robot Star 25

    Rollei 35SE

    My favorite pocket camera:

  • Olympus XA, Ektar, negative scan.

I other news - my 'Scoble camera' did hardly give anything good.
Still puzzling what went wrong, where light leaks came from etc.
Off to online auction house to aquire more cheap but good C-41.
    Meh.

  • more black tape ? - and then more still !

http://www.f295.org/main/forum/ is perhaps worth a bit of time...

My aim is to try to use it for recording.
I have a feeling its the cine camera thing.

  • more black tape ?

    mos def..

thanks for the link too, will have a look!

  • I bought myself a Holga 135 and I'm not dissapointed with the results:)

  • Camera and Bike nerds in one place - this could get distracting. A few shot on Fujifilm 1600 through my Nikon FM2 at the Koenji Awa-Odori in Tokyo, Japan. I miss that film (and that country) ...

  • Really nice captures, motion and emotion.

    ...now that's a well fed cat! : ]

  • I'm off to Afghanistan in 3 weeks time... keen to take some good phots. I've got an Olympus tough as a little digi P&S which is pretty good.

I want to take a 35mm camera though, I own a Yashica T5 but its fucked and has a light leak... I also have a Ricoh GRV1 but its in shit state so I doubt it will survive 7 months in Helmand. Any ideas?

I've had XA, Leica CL, OM2 and FE2 suggested as robust 35mm's to take but I'm not sure. SLR or P&S?

  • ..depends on what you want, doesn't it?

  • (just saw your edit)

..was about to suggest an Olympus XA (assuming you don't wear glasses, as with glasses it's a bit shit to see the finders' frame line all at once), but it's fiddly manual focus might not be ideal for 'travel' shots?

  • FE 2 and a 35mm will be tough as nails - OM 2 pretty good as well.

  • So, I'm after a small, cheap point-and-shoot 35mm with a prime lens. So far it looks like Olympus XA series is the winner, but what other options are there?

Also, selling my OM-20 and lenses and stuffs here:

Do make me an offer if you're interested.

You don't "record" with a cine camera but film. If its a cine 16mm cine camera the questions are clear:

    • brand of camera
    • model of camera (a picture is sufficient)

Unless the camera is obviously defective given that you are unfamiliar with the technology its probably OK. Most 16mm gear is extremely robust. In the UK the greatest probability to brand is one of 1) Bolex 2) Bell and Howell 3) Arri (Arnold and Richter).
In the UK there are good repair guys.. But which one I'd suggest really depends upon the brand and model.

    Bolex H16

    Arri 16ST

    Bell and Howell 70DR Filmo

    Beaulieu R16

The above 4 are probably the most popular 16mm cameras to be found in the hands of amateurs and film students in the UK..

  • So, I'm after a small, cheap point-and-shoot 35mm with a prime lens.l

My favorite cheap p&s 35mm is the Leica Mini-- any of 1,2 or 3. They fetch nearly nothing on the used market--- about the price of 1 or 2 rolls of film--- and are excellent shooters with good glass.
