  • Dear all,

I've recently been in the market for a cheap TLR and came accross the Voightlander Brilliant with a good lens on it for about £30. Reguarding 120 film, where can I get it develop within a reasonable price and time in London?

    Cheers!

  • I go to Bayeux (or better I used to go).... 78 Newman st. W1 if you say that you work as assistant the will make a better prize...but they are not the cheapest in london

  • @philjay

In the great tradition of Blue Peter......... "here's one I made earlier"

    Medium format film processing thread

  • Thanks!

Wow, that is not cheap....think I'll stick to 35mm seeing as I can scan it myself -__-

It's a shame because I totally fell inlove with TLRs..

Maybe it's just my consumer generation upbringing though..

  • Been bumming my new 120mm lens for my M6 lately particularly on sunny days.

  • "bumming", I hope you all understand is a highly technical and little known photographic technique involving equal quantities of silver halide and excitement.

should be cheaper, might as well look for an Lomo Lubitel for £10-15 in Portobello Market.

  • I've been mucking about with an old Lubitel I got on loan. I'm quite chuffed with the results so far.

It's certainly no Rollei, but if you can get one for under £50 it's worth picking up for mucking about with. I'll need to get one of my own I think.

  • ^nice shot^

I use an Olympus mju II, carry it everywhere and it's great. I've been messing about with x processing recently too.

  • fantastic camera that, work perfectly, lens' sharp enough plenty pocketable and pretty cheap, all you need really.

kyuss, nice shot, the Lubitel are a right bitch to focus and set up, but I'm in love with those camera as it prove you don't need the best to get the best shot.

  • A few years ago I helped out on a photography course (link). We used mju IIs because we couldn't find a digital camera (other than pro-spec SLRs) that were fast and let amateurs shoot spontaneously.

The results we got back were amazing. They're great for reportage style stuff, and even portraits.

  • I like it purely for the fact that it'll force you not to worry about the camera itself, force people not to think "ooh is the 50mm F/1.4 sharper than the F/1.8?" while missing the point of photography, good photos is done by the person, camera merely act as a light box.

  • Yep. The opposite of shifting through menus to set ISO at BLAH BLAH BLAH, by which time the moment has passed!

    ;)

    Yeah !

Digital cameras are slow and awkward, and without a doubt a hindrance to spontaneity.

    Jeans are cool.

    Magic is existent.

...and cheers +1. Cheap will do just fine if you know the basics. I didn't find the setting up too much of a pain, but then I've never really got on with digital and have been using my old Canon A1 pretty much exlusively for the past 10 years, so I'm kind of used to manual settings. Obviously the lack of an inbuilt light meter on the Lubitel hasn't helped but I seem to be getting on okay with the sunny 16 rule. I think the lenses on the one I've been loaned are slightly out of sync but it's all going well so far. Hopefully put a couple of more rolls through it next week.

I did buy a Fuji S2000 about 5 years back but didn't get along with it at all, so after a week or two it was given to my nephews to muck about with. I'm just not keen on the whole 'keep pushing the button until you get the picture you want' nature of cheap digital cameras. If you're just starting out in photography digital just teaches you to be lazy. Starting with an old manual film camera teaches you the basics of what real photography is about. I'd still love a proper digital SLR of course, but that's well outwith my budget at the moment.

  • you don't really need a proper digital SLR (if you meant those that cost at least £800+), even a Nikon D40 is pretty good enough as it is.

    if you're still annoyed by the lack of 'film' (as in colour that using film often give) option of the DSLR, then this is for you;

it does film pretty well, I did a test shot with a film camera using Kodak Portra 160VC, and the same on my digital SLR and run the plugin for Kodak Portra, the resemblance is uncanny, I end up using that software for all my work now which save me money from processing the actual film.

just had a gander on that site, when to the examples gallery and found a pic of my mate... (the pouty blonde one)
she's lead singer in a band now... think she's done with modelling.

    Back on topic though:

I really admire you (plural) for sticking to film. The costs seem bad enough for 35mm but 120? sigh
Hopefully it'll be a lot cheaper in NY. Anyone know for sure?
