Analog film photography and cameras

Mentioned to my other half about maybe taking up some new hobbies over the winter instead of doing nothing like I normally would, and mentioned maybe some photography for a laugh. She then pulls an OM-10 out of storage; couldn't believe it really.

I've put some batteries in and most of the mechanisms seem OK, but is there anything else I can do with testing it? I've got some Kodak 200 arriving today so one will be a test roll (unless I should use something exceptionally cheaper). I've got the manual downloaded now as well. I'd planned on taking it to a shop (I'm in E3 so suggestions welcome) to see if there was any defects, but if it makes more sense to just shoot a roll and see what happens then I'll do that...

Fresh battery and shooting a test roll is a good idea (and even more so if you're quite methodical about it, as in: shooting a wide variety of (lighting) situations, and noting down on a piece of paper what shutter speed and f-stop was used for each of the frames, so you have a bit of a clearer idea what might be wrong if pics aren't properly exposed), you could use any (cheap) film for this.

Check the light seals of the camera (the foam stuff along the edges of the film door in the back, especially near the hinge - if this feels quite dry / crumbly / sticky there might be problems with light leaks - but you'd also see this when developing your test roll.

Thanks for the tips. Batteries are some new LR44s - the light meter appears to work but from research I get the impression that people don't trust it after x amount of years. I did something about light seals, but from a glance, nothing seems obvious

Plan was just to put it automatic mode, click and shoot for the next week when out and about and see what happens.

I personally always used Film Dev in Newcastle.

Excellent for E6 processing which I believe they run several times per week. They’re also good people. Last time I was in they were busy processing 20+ Velvia 4x5 sheets for some maniac. Don’t be put-off by the website.

I think the OM XX cameras are all sweet with LR/SR44 batteries - no issues. There’s a possibility of corroded wires, which will effect the meter. A test against a free Lightmeter app on a phone is easy enough. They’re usually within half a stop or completely obviously off (or non-functioning).

I received my first scans from the Pentax Auto 110. Unfortunately, it seems like half of the first roll was unusable. There is a common problem with this camera where the battery would be loose and therefore the shutter speed automatic wouldn't work. You can either put in some foam or quick hack was applying some pressure in the right spot while taking photos.
Also, it seems a lot harder than expected to not have your own fingers somewhere in the photos:D.

Also just thought it must be nice to shoot portraits with this thing (as it's so small and non-intimidating / toy-camera like) 🙂

Found a couple of colour photos of Richmond on my long departed Leica M2

I can only see one photo (the landscape shot, which is fucking beautiful by the way - what lens was this shot with, if you happen to remember?)

for anyone that's interested, i sent my roll of velvia slide film off to exposure film lab - looks like they've only been doing E-6 since july, but prices seemed pretty keen and it looks like they provide decent high res scans.

no idea what's on the roll as i can't remember shooting any film for probably 7 years. just found this one at the back of my drawer in the office.
i'll post up any interesting shots (if anything comes out at all)

Yeah, reflections are interesting 🙂
Though, frankly, with that shot it wasn't really about the reflections but rather about the stuff inside the car (photographing the stuff people put behind the windscreen of their cars / buses a lot lately) - yet sometimes you can't really eliminate all the reflections with the polarizing filter so this is what happened there.. 💁

Oh yeah, weird, I thought there were a couple more!

Its one of my favourites, something about the grain and rendering which made the trees and background look like an oil painting.

It was most likely a Voigtlander 35mm f2.5 color-skopar.
The other lens I tended to use was a Voigtlander 50mm f1.5, but doubt I would have used that for the landscape.

This one is a bit moodier.
