Dead Fox diptych.
A lady waits outside the QMC
A portait in a lecture theater.Just got my first 120mm film developed. Quite happy with the results.
Camera:
If I get a film scanner, can I scan directly from the (developed) negatives?
Any ideas of good (cheap ones) that can do both 35 and 120? My Flatmate is getting into using more film and if we split it it might be feasible. -

these are rare. dedicated 35mm scanners are easy enough to come by, just check online reviews and fine a good cheap(ish) one. obviously don't worry about included software, as the majority of it is shit anyway - if you need to post-process just do it in PS.
for 120 the best option for consumers is just a normal flatbed scanner, with strips to put the film in. you'll be able to do both with this type of scanner, but the 35mm results might not be to the greatest standard. what do you need the scans for? if they're just for personal use, then you should be fine with a flatbed, and if you want decent enlargements/high-res scans for print or web, then take them to a lab. it's impossible to match the quality of a drum scanner or an optical enlarger at home in limited space anyway.
nice pictures by the way

awesome.
Its just for personal use, so I can decide which are the ones I want blown up (which are again for personal use- I'm not fooling myself- I'm just having fun.
Is there anything in particular I should look out for with the scanner?
was thinking this:

I've got a Canoscan 9000f which came with holders for 35/120 and slides. Might be worth checking out the cheaper models to see if they do the same.

cheap scanners are a false economy and massively frustrating unfortunately.
I would recommend looking at 2nd hand dedicated 35mm film scanners first - the Minolta ones are pretty good (Nikon are much better but pricey). Don't go too cheap/old or you will find they are all SCSI rather than USB/firewire which can be a pain in the arse.
If you are going to be shooting enough 120 then I think the Epson V500 would be the absolute min I would recommend -but its output will (generally) be a lot poorer with 35mm than a dedicated 35mm scanner.

got a cheap epson with 35mm + 120 holder a while ago, put a few rolls through it but the effort and time you need to go through to get even somewhat ok-ish, if even that, results, makes it so unworthy
i'll do all my rolls dev and scan now, it's good enough for flickr and i rather spend a fiver more for each roll than a bungload for a scanner

So is dpi count the thing to look for?
thanks for all the advice.

I develop all my B&W at home and scan it on an Epson V500, I think the results are good enough for the web, and even printing up to say 10x8 from 35mm is really quite good.
I used to spend hours tweaking each scan, but now I just accept that the auto setting is better at it than me for most photos. If they are really dark or really light, then I have to get involved with the histogram.

^^^^^^This.
Henners, Epson and Canon both do extremely good scanners, that are not film specific, but are worthy pieces of equipment.
The Canon 9900f MacReady mentions above, and the Epson V330 are both worth a serious look.Just to clarify, I'm using the 9000f not the 9900f. The scanner is greater than my technical ability for the moment, very happy with it.
I asked earlier but is anyone using Silverfast? I'm curious about the HDRi feature

I'll probably go for that one.
Cheers all.
Now to save up. -

Not really - unless you are going to print massive posters....
You want to look at Dmax and the ability to focus the scanner and keep the film as flat as possibleI asked earlier but is anyone using Silverfast? I'm curious about the HDRi feature
No - I have tried but cannot get on with the interface, I generally use Vuescan for scans that I want to redo (after a quick contact sheet type scan in Epson Scan)

Managed to sell the Minolta lens for £50.
Buyer was lovely, wanted some more decent lens, as he really loves taking photos of his sons growing up.
He may be interested in the Pentax SLR, but we'll see. The pentax is/was my favourite cameraMaybe one day my passion for photography will pick up again. (I did a photography gcse, but went through some hard times and lost interest in it after passing) but for now ill stick to my compact and my phone!
I do like browsing this thread and seeing some beautiful images.
I'll stfu now!

Have they opened the bag in the light to photograph the paper?
Is it not now all exposed?

A couple images from my first roll in my XA2. Also that ebay listing had me tense as every image slowly opened it more and more.

I tried to take photos on a DSLR last night and it just wouldn't do anything I wanted. Despite being on the right light settings I just couldn't get any of the pics the way I wanted. I got sooooo pissed off. I really really can't make them work for me. And then I realised I had left my XA flash at home. cries

Someone must've told him because the only bid was cancelled and the auction taken down!

Funny enough on its own but the fact it had a bidder creased me up. Proof there are two idiots in the world at least!

Silverfast keeps crashing on me now. Insania, I HATE it.
Yeah it's a bit of a heffer! Lovely camera nonetheless.
Top and bottom were taken in Matera and middle three in Lecce. I like the the workshop dude too. There were loads of workshops like this with doors opening out on to the streets. The smell of sawdust. Mmmmmmm...
