  • Ha, nice one!

  • Is there any chance you've bought counterfeit film? Could be coming from inside the canister

  • You have to cut the leader to shape

I cut the leader (of multiple films in advance) but you can just slip a business card or similar under it if you can't be bothered/forget. Never caused me any problems.

  • Does the winding mechanism extrude anything when you fire and wind on with the back open (and no film in) ?

  • Compact test#2. This time a Nikon 'Light Touch'* 70W, £1.99 from Oxfam. Shot a test roll of HP5 in the local park on the cycle to work. Also experimented with shooting it at 400 and getting the lab to push one stop in dev, and quite like the look.

    *Should be titled 'Marshmallow Touch'

  • Dont think so. Used two rolls of colorplus in it now. Bought from different sources, one from a reputable shop in Brighton, and the same thing has occured

  • No not at all. Although looking at the negs from the previous test roll theres a scratch just below the image all the way along the strip. I think this might be something to do with it but no idea why it would cause it to create the weird brown and white stuff

  • I think this might be something to do with it but no idea why it would cause it to create the weird brown and white stuff

Yeah, I think that's the problem. A worn guide rail around the shutter that's scratching off the emulsion and film base ?

  • Grainmageddon, I like it.

  • Sorry everyone for the constant spam about this but im 95% sure this was the issue !

I checked the guide rails...lo and behold there was a couple of TINY chips/scratches out of the top one right where the film exits the canister (pics to come in a minute). I chucked a roll of film in and ran it back and forth over the chip like it would in normal use. It started scratching the film and creating the dust again!

Broke out a needle file and very gently filed the rail smooth, making sure to only run the file in one direction. Cleaned all the crap out from inside and loaded a roll. The reason I'm so sure this has worked is that now when winding forwards it is MUCH smoother, where previously it was incredibly grindy. Thanks for the help @Ste_S and everyone else ! I promise this will be my last post about this

  • Yay ! Success !

  • Good work @Turkish

  • I'm disappointed you're finally not owning a tobacco/coke maker camera...

  • Analogue camera Jesus - turns film emulsion into tobacco and coke

  • Me too :( although I dont smoke or do drugs...
I tried eating some of the 'coke', didnt really taste of anything. Now I know I was eating emulsion. Probably cancer causing who knows

  • Just been looking at my 2018 photos and realise more than ever that I love film way more than digital. Even when it's digitized.

Started me looking back through the last 3.5 years of film adventures.

    8474 frames :)

Here's an old one of Molly, Minolta Dynax +50mm F1.4 on Ilford XP2

  • People who use filmdev, how do you mark film to show that it needs to be pushed in development? Is there an industry standard way of doing so ? Don't really want to write on the order form as they sometimes forget stuff thats on there

  • I have never used the form, I just write it on a piece of paper, all of it, with my shitty handwriting.

  • Just Push +1, +2, +3 etc

This for your experiment pushing Colorplus ? Be interested to see how it turns out - I had colour shifts when I tried pushing Porta 400 to 1600.

  • Either on the film canister itself or on the form. In big block capitals.

  • Colorplus isn't even the speed it says on the box. Don't push it...

  • Yep got a roll shot at 1600. Will post some of my own when I get them back but also found this:

So I have some faith the pics won't look completely wack :)
