  • Hahaha, that's a good one

    ?!

  • @Ste_S XP2 is usually extremely fine grain. Unless it’s under exposed or processed too hot or something.

  • Also ... most ‘grain’ visible on these pages is due to software sharpening at scanning. If you printed from those negs you’d probably see no grain.

  • I’m well aware I need to stop being a backseat driver in this thread and post some photography! Apols.

  • ?!

I wouldn't go out on a limb and say XP2 has both the tonal range and sharpness as T-Max and Delta (which is sort of a bold statement for starters), claiminig it has the grain of both HP5 and Tri-X is definitely bold, boarderlining nonsense actually.
While the grain of these two does indeed look very similar in most scenarios (given they're both traditional b&w emulsions) XP2 - a dye-based C-41 emulsion - is a different story though and saying it posesses the holy g̶r̶a̶i̶l̶ grain of HP5 is downright blasphemy.

  • Ps: fuck XP2, and BW400Cn while you're at it.

  • I like XP2, can dev it at boots for way cheaper than non-C41 and has a unique look to it

The shade can also get funky, from colour film residue? But can correct in post, I tend to leave it adds something to it imo.

Shrugs Can only say what I've noticed from using it. For me it's a nice half way house between TMax/Delta and Tri-X/HP5 that costs £6 a roll to get dev/scan vs £10 for trad B&W, and if I want it urgently I can get it done at a one hour photo

  • You can dev real b&w in your sink for 30p.

  • Sssshh! Quiet in the back seat!

  • : P

  • Haha truth.

  • You indeed don't post a lot, but if I recall correctly it was always very nice things when you did post!

  • One day, when i have a scanner, enlarger and £££ for the outlay, oh and space to put it.
Boots will deal with my student life for now

  • nice shot, where is that?

  • Looks a bit like Paraty.

  • Leica iiia/colourplus

  • FWIW I definitely think xp2 super has its place (and find it much nicer than bw400cn). I always get given a couple of rolls of it at Christmas for some reason - my father is a creature of habit!
It definitely seems pretty sharp. But it’s a bit odd, sometimes it comes out with good tones, sometime it’s totally graphic - super contrasty.
Either way I put a roll through my T4 (I think) and I have one in my Leica. So i’ll Be back to loving or hating it when they come back from the lab no doubt.

  • Some old xp2 favourites (all shot on the T4, a good combo).

  • Indeed, a keen eye, taken in Paraty.

Road tripped along from Sao Paulo to Rio with stops in Paraty, Ilha Grande. Really incredible, but also frustrating that you have to have your wits about you, especially RJ and Angra dos Reis.

  • That Chinese takeaway shop has a great atmosphere, straight out of a crime thriller

  • Really like the first one, hoping to see more pics from your T4.

  • Where are you taking those XP2 for developing?
