Does anyone have any suggestions of film I should take with me?
You might want to buy some of your film out there. x-rays aren't nice to fast film.

Alright, scored an MJU ii for £40, now looking for fast film for my trip to Berlin.
Never shot film faster than 400, so will to take any advice. Been looking at Cinestill 800 but can't find it in the UK.

Cinestill is good stuff but I wouldn't consider it a fast film, per se. You can get a useable image from it rated at 800 but it can be grainy. Much nicer rated at 400 or 320. For faster colour film I'd suggest Portra 800 or even Lomo 800 (also gets grainy rated at 800).
Only CineStill stockist in London I know is West End Cameras on Tottenham Court Road, there's a few places online though.

Ok, good info. Thanks!

Portra 800 is a safe bet for quality and you can down rate it when things get shiny but my favourite fast film is the Fuji superia stuff. The 1600 is great but that might be a bit much for x-Ray's... Those greens...

This is the Fuji 1600 after going through an X-ray machine once

Still works! Something about that film... It really pops in daylight as well.

This is the 800 version

Didn't try it in daylight, probably wouldn't be able to on the Hexar without some sort of ND filter

Meh, just overexpose the crap out of it. It'll be fine. Pretty sure that top one was shot at 1/125...

That looks like fun! Wondering if I can send the film home to myself rather than have it x-rayed
-
• #12016
You can ask to have it hand checked at airport security but I've found that to be a bit hit and miss

Might try that! Just sent 4 rolls to filmdev.co.uk yesterday, scans via file transfer this afternoon.
Great service!

Thanks for the recommendation on them btw, used them to develop a dozen rolls a few weeks back, saved me a load of money. Service was quick and the quality good

No problem, I'm really impressed by their service too.
Some Fuji Superia 200 they developed for me here.

Why not buy film in Berlin?
Guess it's cheaper here as well.. check Foto Impex if you are downtown..Cine Still 800 is good stuff, but it really is tungsten balanced.
Try a roll!
Also Portra 800 is great. -

Will drop in there on the Friday afternoon I think @ItkI
Going to bring a few rolls of Portra 800 with me I think.

+1 for Superia, both 800 and 1600 versions can be shot at those speeds and look really good.
For night indoors I usually shoot slower film with a flash... or bw pushed.
I've not tried Portra 800 or Cinestill but Portra 400 can be shot two stops under and pushed without much grain. Colours look odd but not bad.

The package may well be x-rayed!
If you take it through in hand luggage you can at least try and get them to hand-check it.
Good work with the olympus.

Doesn't Porta 800 cost like one hundred pounds a roll? I actually like it - nice colors and grain - but I genuinely can't afford to buy it.
If I wanted an 800+ iso film for a trip like that I would probably choose... portra 400. Rating it at 800 doesn't hurt it much imo (and that's without pushing) + it has more latitude and handles artificial light better.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that portra 800 is just 400 in different packaging... I know it's not but the fact you can push 400 to 1600 makes me question why they bothered making 800.
Some googling finds people pushing 400 to 3200 with not-horrible results.
Still prefer Fuji stuff for those ISOs
