  • Putney Cycles did not have one in one of their branches, member of staff fitted a new sprocket and lockring without using a chain whip properly and tightened the lockring with a screwdriver. It all came undone in less than a minute of riding.

Had to then wheel my bike to another branch of them which did have the appropriate tools and someone competent.

  • I mean. I work at Evans. We have 4/5 LR tools.

Have to say that I find that very hard to believe. I'm not suggesting that you're lying, but let's be honest, you can't run a fucking bike shop without the most basic tools. In this particular case, can we be certain that they didn't deliberately sabotage your bike in an attempt to assassinate you?

  • He then said to me 'that'll be £11.50 please". Thinking it was some vain attempt at humor I asked him if he was joking, to which he replied "no" and continued to fiddle with the cash register. I asked him what it was for, and he replied with "labor charge". Outraged, I said to him "you can go back into your workshop and loosen it or I can walk out your shop without paying" he then mumbled something about there being no point in him going back inside the workshop, so I left the store.

So you refused to pay a labour charge for getting your lockring tightened.

Nothing is free, get over it.

  • About as much as you charge people for receiving your vocal and written abuse.

Totally worth it, according to Which? magazine.

  • Thread dredge....

I'm after a new mountain bike and I'm considering putting it on the Ride/Work sceme they offer at my employer. Thing is, it'll be ~£1,500 and the limit is £1,000. Does anyone know if they still allow you to top-up?

Also, is there any chance of them ordering something in which doesn't appear on their website?

  • Yeah you can top up, I dont know about the other thing though.

  • Anyone order a bike from Evans that came with tubs? I splurged a bit and put down a deposit on something tasty... which has to come from the warehouse. Wondering if they'll use tape (like I'd expect) or if they'll get some poor bastard to glue them.

  • I would imagine the tubs would already be fitted to the boxed bike, as per clinchers, unless manufacturers are too lazy to do the stretching and taping etc. Most Evans techs won't have touched a tub before. If they're sensible and ask around for someone to do it at gatwick/head office they'll get Pedja to do it, and he'll do it right

  • I predict they'll forget to glue or tape them, and they'll just be on "dry".

This is how the bikes on the shop floor are setup if they have tubs.

  • Why not ask Evans? Crazy, I know.

  • They're likely not to fit them and let the customer get huffed up instead.

  • I asked them and got the following marvellous reply:

    Hi

    Thank you for your email

We can offer you the option of gluing if you would prefer this. Due to the complications that surround fitting a tubeless tyre we would recommend not carrying a spare. They are best used for racing, where their advantages over traditional bikes can be exploited.
If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Kind Regards

I'm assuming from this that they're taped (which is great), but I have asked for confirmation. However, I didn't really need the uninformed lesson on not running tubs!

I guess I'll also email BMC and find out how it leaves the factory...

They're likely not to fit them and let the customer get huffed up instead.

As I have it on deposit for a test ride, I'd like to think it will have tyres!

  • What BMC did you buy?

  • They should have a browsing option on the website that only shows items that are in stock in a shop you choose.
I haven't found a single item yet that is in stock in any of the shops in soho.

  • What BMC did you buy?

Something very silly, that I have been lusting over since I first laid eyes on it. :)

Well, maybe it's just me, but I certainly wouldn't *allow *anyone else but me to stick my tubs on.

    Here are a few hints.

    1. If the tubs are new, fit them on the rim first without glue and inflate hard. Some new tyres are very tight and this will help to stretch them.

    2. 'Etch' the rim with sandpaper or similar (Ali only - carbon is above my pay grade and I have no knowledge of it)

    3. Give rim two coats of glue - be generous here - it will help when you have to change a tyre in the rain (and you will have to do this).

    4. While I'm on this subject, never go out of walking distance of home, in cycling shoes, without at least one good spare. Spares should not be brand new and have been already fitted to a rim - ideally they should have a residue of old glue to help adhesion.

    5. When the tub is newly mounted on the rim spend time making sure it is running true. It's necessary to do this when the glue is fresh and the tyre is still moveable.

    6. It's preferable to give the tyres at least a week to settle.....especially if you're riding an important event on them. I'm not quite sure why it is, but newly mounted tyres seem to be more vurnerable. I received this knowledge from Ken Ryall, who certainly ought to have known what he was talking about.

    7. Hand glued (colle main) tyres (these are the highest quality) are best matured over at least one winter. This is irrelevant with vulcanized tyres.

    8. Are you sure you want to bother with all this?

  • Thanks. Yeah, I'm willing to give it a go. I have several friends who ride on tubs all the time without too much hassle. As much as I love my tubeless setup CX bike (both road and CX tubeless wheelsets), I don't think tubs are that much of a pain really.

  • Anyone had problems with refund? My bike that is on the way had some minor damage, they offered 25pound refund, I accepted, but the communication with Paul Butler is really slow by email. Before calling I want to get bike first, but I don't understand why they can't refund thru paypal

  • The stock check facility on their website is total bullshit. Don't use it, it's broken.

  • Anyone who works at Evans on here? Could you do me a favour with a stock check for an Arkose 2 in Small?
Will repay in beers or something.

  • Evans are selling half price Specialized grips at the mo. ( But not cheap in black ) Free pickup from their stores if you order online. I use the Enduros on 5 bikes and they last about a year.
