  • Evans Cycles claim they 'Will not be beaten on price'
    http://www.evanscycles.com/news.jsp?item_id=743

    Interesting...

The Steamroller sells at Evans for £599.99

BUT it is £539.99 with free delivery at Winstanleys Bikes
    http://www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk/index.html?pageTitle=Surly&pageDesc=&action=search&submit=go&maincatID=0&searchtype=catID&quicksearch=912

Has anyone challenged Evans in this way? I will do that this weekend when I test ride the Steamroller. I'll report back if they shift their price for me or indeed if they change their price across the board for the SS.

Maybe should get EC to change their price and have it delivered from Winstanleys...

I might well spring for that bike this weekend, but in case anyone out there has a decent steel fixie to sell that would suit a 5ft8in guy, PM me...

    ta

  • hopefully if presisted they might knocked off 40 quid bringing the final total to £499, or probably just lower it to match the price winstanleys bikes offered, methinks the latter is what they'd do.

  • the bike shop i work at says "we wont be beaten on price" but only localy and if the other store actualy has stock, evens probably stipulate the same thing

  • Tried the Steamroller today - Evans set it up with brakes front and back by the way, which is not how they describe or picture it on their site. Gears 48:19 fixed. Mentioned Winstanleys' cheaper price and they were happy to match it. So you can get one for £539.99 if you want.

The test ride itself was interesting for me. My first fixed ride. Not too odd, but I cycled well within myself and away from traffic. The bike was smooth like butter. With two brakes fitted, stopping was not disimilar from my geared bike. I tried slowing down with legs (not skid stops) and that didn't seem too hard but glad to have two brakes.

It seemed fine. I have no point of reference in terms of fixed gear cycles, so don't no how fine it is. Maybe should try out some other brands/custom bikes...

  • Good to see they are as good as their word, although half the time it depends who you speak to in the shop, can be a bit of a lottery in some places as I'm sure has been mentioned a zillion times on here and other places.

  • 48/19 is a good gear, plenty of skid patches, gentle but not too easy. Surprised they use that actually.

Wasn't the steamroller like 700 quid last year? I wanted one but it was WAY out of my price bracket at the time.

  • Yeah, I thought they were really expensive last year too.

The components on the off the peg one are a lot cheaper than what I was initially looking at, I suppose.

@Tynan - so you bought an argon 18 instead? :P

  • tynan? he aint in this thread, unless he's hiding...

  • Sorry, forgot to say, was set up with pedals and strap, too

  • The usual OTP suspects are all reduced at Evans.

£50-£60 on the cheaper bikes, £250 on the Cannondale.

606 called this in on that thread (specifically about OTP SS)

  • Here's the bad news. They're reducing prices on 07 stock to cover the increase of several percent over their entire '08 range, due to the credit crunch (ie due to a greedy company passing on the squeeze to consumers rather than taking it like a man).

  • Here's the good news. asm might work in Evans quite soon and he can get us ALL discounts on '08 OTPs.

    Hooray!

  • Saw they have the Cannondale Capo for £550

  • Saw they have the Cannondale Capo for £550

    It defo wasn't worth £799.

Not really convinced it's worth five and a half hundred sheets either.

It's a generic Taiwanese alu frame with a selection of low-rent components.

Thirty quid cranks, no-brand finishing kit.

    Neine danke.

    Hooray!

If they ever read that, I definitely won't have a job! YEss

  • As long as you didn't put ASM down as your name on the application form think you'll be alright ;)

  • If yer can spell asm yer probably over-qualified for E****.

  • good point archi.

Well, apparently not, I ain't heard back from them. Although they don't actually appear to have any vacancies at all in central london according to their website.

  • jeez someone must have a job for you - have you trawled round the smaller shops? Maybe Jan needs a summer mechanic? Jan?

  • good point archi.
