Just done my second triathlon:
Swim 8:50 (300m) - same as last time
Bike 46:41 (22.5km) - better than last time
Run 41:16 (should have been 5km but misdirected by marshal, so a load of us did 8km!)I used a geared hybrid and was only over taken by nice-looking road bikes with aero bars, which was pleasing. I came 99th in the bike bit in a field of about 260-odd.
It is a well, flat course, so use of one gear is totally on for this race (St Albans Triathlon). Only thing against it, apart from the numbnuts marshal, is the early start time. You have to have your bike racked by 6.45am.
Zoinks! I can just about make a sub 50min 10k - that's without all the cycling and swimming before!
I did my first tri last year, a sprint (300m/20k/5k) and did 8:49, 48:34, 26:46 for an overall time of 1:23:56 - coming 153 out of 209. I guess I am old (44), riding a hybrid and I've never been fast (or first) at anything. In the main, I race to beat my own best times. Which is what I'll do in a couple of weeks when I do this race again. That's plenty of motivation for moi.
Next year I'd like to do an Olympic distance, but I can only think about a good time for me.

British Cycling will not allow fixed to mix with free in mass start events either....you wouldn't be allowed to start a crit on a fixed or a track race on a freewheel / geared bike.

Bastards should take lessons from our ride yesterday. We were fixed and geared mixing it up freely!

Just to prove it to myself, I looked at the BTA website http://www.britishtriathlon.org/events/page.php?article=&category=/events/&folder=rules/ at the two PDFs of rules there - Competition Rules (no mention of freewheels) and Technical Rules, which has a paragraph in bold about freewheels (see attached). You only need one working brake according to the Competition Rules, but Technical Rules prescribes two. Go figure. Am now ordering up a freewheel...

Sorry Thread Dredging a little, but I'm joining the london fields triathlon club and have no geared bike at the moment, let alone a tri bike.
ShannonBall: have you done one on SS in the end?
I done the Sherborne Ironman (2.5 mile swim, 112 mile ride and a 26 mile run) ride last year and was planning on doing it again this year if it wasn't for the pesky accident.
