  • You're both right of course.

My problem is just the variation of surface that I have to deal with on my ride.. tarmac, leafy (that was more of a scene setter than surface description) lanes, and glassy SOHO back streets.

My dream would be, an all black (with tan option) tacky rubber compound with a randonneaur/pasela style tread pattern with world beating puncture protection in 25c... is that really too much to ask? fucking hell!?

Probably, the tyre makers have to appeal to general needs I suppose.

I go for puncture resistance above all else and make do with some slipping and sliding. I even go offroad (fire roads, singletrack etc,.) on 23c Armadillos for 50% of my rides. It keeps the bike handling skills up :-)

That's pretty much what I rock right now, UltraGatorSkin on the front and a bit of a curve ball with a Panaracer Stradius Sport TG on the back which does slide around a bit hence the dream of a new "Wonder Tyre" to replace it. Ho-hum.

  • What about one large thread with headed sub-sections?

  • Michelin carbon kryolin 23 mm or 25 mm, very fast, and hard wearing, and can stand a good pounding of glass, gravel, cobblestones.....

  • Evans are selling Schwalbe Stelvios (23's only) for £19.99 at the moment, down from £33 odd.

they aren't puncture resistant though. Nice and smooth, but paper thin.

  • Tyres were put on this earth by Satan... Deceitful fuckers, tyres*...

    • Apart from Panaracer Paselas which are awesome... In a gentle, touring kinda way...
  • Don't know if the old Hutchinson Kevlars or similar are still available anywhere-
Never got a puncture except for hawthorn thru the sidewall and trained on them all yr when I was a kid.. could trust them everywhere- good lean angles.

I do not know of such things.

  • Bontrager race-x-lite AC are the way forward. I've had 2 sets running on 2 bikes now and they've collectively covered about 4000 miles. Sure, they're looking a bit worn but... I haven't had a puncture, not even one!!

They come in a multitude of colours and widths. And superb grip in the wet and dry. They are folding and quite expensive, but I wouldntbgrtva
ny other tire now for a "street" bike.

    Reccomended.

  • ^good tyres indeed, but don't have the thickness of rubber necessary to withstand mucho skidding.

  • Updated prices, plus added a bargain Designed-As-Puncture-Resistant Vredestein Ricorso PRS
and also the Panaracer Pasela TG.

  • Mister could you include the Conti top contact in ***Designed-As-Puncture-Resistant, ***they are very good titre, a I will say very close to the Marathon Plus in terms of quality

  • rik, this list is only for tyres that are available in the 700x23c size. But I'll add the Top Contact
to the (Most) Puncture Proof Tyres / Tires list.

Its a very good recommendation though, as it has a double layer of Vectran as puction protection. And Vectran has been excellent in the very lightweight Continental GP 4000 that I have used for quite a long time. Considering its such a lightweight/racing tyre, it has punctured, but not very often, and I use my tyres for commuting in all weather, and on the infamous OKR.

  • sorry I miss that piece of info

  • those dutch "airless " Nu-Teck Tires tyres looks kinda alright

  • i have to say i am tempted, just out of curiosity more than anything. And they are not expensive either.

  • actually, the Nu Teck 700x20, which is the one i would go for (lightest but still brick heavy) is £40 :(

The Green tyres at £20 is a much better deal and they are comparatively lighter but their website is fooked..

  • Just added a new, and probably a very significant tyre.

The Halo Courier Berlin has the external design of the Halo Twin Rail, but with Schwalbe Marathon Plus - type of protection.
Its the only 700x24 added to the list. I felt it should be the exception, as it really does look perfect for puncture avoidance.

  • ^ very interesting. Do look like the Marathon Plus solution which we know works pretty much 100%. The difference is that the 24c weighs in at 415g vs the 580g for the Marathon plus. They also make a 29c at only 475g.

Why did you have to show me those, I thought I was happy with my Marathon Plus 25c !!

  • The jury's out 'til we hear what the sidewalls are like... Tho' they look pretty tough from here...

are M+ only 580g.? in an older issue of Cycling + they indicate 708g for the 700x25...then 415g is much lighter...!

PS: i run M+ and no flat for 10,000 miles!!!!

  • durano +, as much protection as the Marathon or the halo and only 380g in 25c
