Anti-Puncture Tyres At-a-glance

  • Must say I have really appreciated my conti 4 seasons.

nearly 6 months, and only a couple of puncture, generally doing 150 miles a week.

had worn through the back tyre to the beading last night so removed it, put a new tyre on the front and swapped the front tyre to the back.

the tyre i swapped had over 20 bits of glass/flint embedded but none had made any deep progress through the tyre, all fairly much just on the surface. took a while to remove all the intruders and glue up the bigger holes but am satisfied with the tyres as a purchase.

    just dont tell hippy.

i bet he's drinking out of one of these reading this now

  • Fosters tinnies, like Contis are shit.

  • :)

  • I have just skidded through another 23mm Bonty Hardcase - long walk home. I got about a fortnight out of them which is not good enough. Like the tyre and have never had a puncture with them so they are tough enough if you dont skid. Cheap as chups too.

  • Sounds like you could do with touring tyre on the back. Have you tried Conti Top Contact or Vittoria Randonneur?

  • Not sure about 4-seasons but my Gatorskins were frickin' glass-magnets. Puncture-proofness is alright but they do get shredded. I've pulled some savage pieces out before. They're alright to skid on once you've broken them in but they're so soft they don't last long at all. So just to round up...me no likey.

I've seen the light! Refuse on the front, Rando on the back. Never worry about glass again. And they're easier to get on too (ignore edscoble's account). Win-fucking-win.

  • I've not tried the Refuse.

I'm saving a couple of Gatorskins to use on the front next winter. They do grip alright.

  • I find Gatorskins fine in the dry, but appallingly slippery in the wet (even worse, in fact than the Kenda things that come on a Fuji Track). I have a slightly used set I keep forgetting to give to Fred because I just don't trust them enough to want to use them.

Cheers Miro. I had a loko at the Randonneurs today but on the advice of the fella in Shop 14 went with the Conti SportsContact. Went up from 23s to 28s and notice the difference. I might be imagining things but it feels like theres a bit more rolling resistance but a more supple ride which is what I was hoping for.

Ive REALLY noticed the difference in skidding too. The hardcase gives an inconsistent almost stop/start skid (dont really know how to describe it). The conti seems to be more, i dont know, consistent??

Fucking Kendas! I bought one from that little shop on Kingsland road today as I needed a cheapy to get me down to 14 to buy a proper tyre. I have never had so much trouble getting a tyre on. Bent lever, trashed thumbs, 2 man job. Piece of shit!

  • Aye, they're horrid. I have Vittor Paves ready to go onto the new wheels once I've visited hillbilly.

  • Seriously, that tyre made me angry.

  • Rubino Pro Tech onto Campag Protons has been the worst thus far. About half an hour of swearing and torn up hands per tyre. I think Campag rims (and the Protons in particular) are a little oversize. OTOH, they're gorgeous wheels in all other respects and only cost £140 for the pair so I'm inclined to forgive.

  • Also, Kool Stop bead jacks FTW. Available at Condor - don't leave home etc.

They are great tyres but be warned that they do wear very quickly, especially on dry roads. They are also quite prone to cuts. But they really, really grip.

  • The best tires I have ever used. Michelin Krylion Carbon.

  • I agree Ved, I have a pair of the Krylions on my winter bike and have run them all winter and there isn't a mark on them.

  • How do they wear for skiddies? My biggest concern at the moment is durability.

Rubinos, Rubino Pros, Gatorskins, Randonnuers, Ultra Race... all a complete bastard to get on my Campag Omega Vs. On my Maqvic cxp23s the tyres practically fit themselves!

    :o

when I have Randonneurs, I can feel it have more rolling resistance, but once pushed above it's recommended psi (pushed it to 110psi), it felt like a 23c tyres (recommended psi was 85).

what the max psi on the sportcontact?

    Winning combo

No idea dude, these have always been on the road bike.

    You knows it!

Coming up to 4000 miles and no punctures with that combo. Just about to replace my second Randonneur.

Says 102 psi on the side.

  • Conti GP4000s or Soma Everwear - both come in great colours too...thats important!
