Anti-Puncture Tyres At-a-glance

  • I should mention that I have normally run the Halo Courier Berlin tyres at a minimum of 120psi to a maximum of 130psi (this was preferred for me). The over-inflation didn't harm performance of those tyres, but enhanced them. I would use 130psi on the rear only. The front I would run at anything from 100psi (dropping to 80-90psi when I forgot to check), to 120psi. I find that the halo Courier Berlin performs very well when slightly over-inflated. However, it is an individual experience, and I'd only recommend this sort of inflation levels for the heavier rider. The sidewalls on the Courier Berlin tyres are massively strong. Though I did have a sidewall blowout, I believe that it was from damage I had caused by taking a corner through glass shards. For a very light person, the Courier Berlin could be ridden when losing air, and nearly flat. The sidewalls are that strong.

Great advice. I had 3 'Oh, shit' moments on my way to work the other day riding with a Courier Berlin on the rear, just broke away when cornering. Scared the crap out of me, especially since I binned it 2 weeks ago when the rear slid out and tore up my knee, I rode home like a nervous schoolgirl.

Was ready to chuck the tyre away as I'd lost all confidence in it then I read this, went and checked the pressure. Whadda ya know was down to 100psi. Pumped it back up to 125 and rides like a dream again.

  • So, I've been riding the 'Halo Twin Rail Courier Road Tyre with BPP' since the last bridges ride, and they felt a little rough, so I spun them when I got to work, and found this:

I'm not happy. Thats in less than a month, and under 700 miles

  • that's because they're shit

  • yup. I'm arging not fit for puropse sold, and didn't last long enough.

Bloody Wiggle. Will not use again.

    Edit

can anyone recommend something better? I need to get it ordered ASAP.

  • Do you have a really low skid patch number?

  • hardly any skid patches, I think that there are about 3, but I run single speed, not fixed, so rotating the tyre won't really help :(

I suspect that its were I've locked up from speed, doing an emergancy stop as someone danced out into the road in front of me

  • Just try not to skid every now and then, skip skid if you must.

  • SS ed...

One emergency stop shouldn't mash a tyre like that.

Hence why I don't ride halos... probably wouldn't last me to the bottom of my street...

  • looking at the halo website, they seem to do hardcase tyres too now, specifically for rears. I suspect I've just got standard on both, but still its not what I expect to happen to a tyre in a month

  • unless it's a race tyre it shouldn't wear through that quickly. The only person who has said they're any good is GA2G, and even then he admits they're shit until the twin rail wears down.
Just get a proper tyre like a Durano.

  • It's probably best to explain also that GA2G promotes the courier Berlin, not the normal courier twin rail.
I agree a tyre used on a SS should not go through like that at all.
I would always suggest marathon plus tyres for anyone who wants a fit and forget tyre (my rear lasted a year with skidding.)

  • They're bloody heavy though.

  • as I understand it, those are the Berlins:

Wiggle | Halo Twin Rail Courier Road Tyre with BPP City Tyres

Just Wiggle don't quite say so in their title

  • If you want a decent priced bombproof tyre for less than a Marathon costs then there is only one choice... Randonneur!

They are great value, just don't ask Ed to fit them for you.

  • does make it tempting to pop into Evans in Wimbledon, and get them fitted though ;)

  • Yeah, you will have to film it and post it up on here for posterity.

  • hmmm, which of the Vittorias to get though?

    the Randonneur Hyper?
or the Rigid version of the foldable Randonneur Pro?

  • Rigid is harder for Ed to fit.

  • but which will last longer?

I suspect that I'll end up fitting them to be fair :)

  • Gatorhardshell.

  • Gatorhardshell.

    +1

  • Don't buy the brev tyres either!
Supposed to be able to handle skidding for a while.
Two days and I needed a new set!

  • hardly any skid patches, I think that there are about 3, but I run single speed, not fixed, so rotating the tyre won't really help :(

I suspect that its were I've locked up from speed, doing an emergancy stop as someone danced out into the road in front of me

There are an infinite number of skid patches on a SS setup due to your ability to coast. Skids are for kids on anything other than fixed. Use your front brake like a normal person.

  • that is what I was trying to explain to ed. :)

Skids are sometimes unavoidable in emergancy stop situations. One emergancy stop in 700 miles/1 month should not rip out the tread of a tyre.

  • Any consensus on Panaracer Ribmos yet?

I've had the same set of Randonneurs on my last two beater/commuters for over two years without a single puncture. flippin' marvellous.

only issue is that running steel mudguards the 28c profile leaves practially no clearance and i've had to bash and bend the guards over the years to avoid tyre rub. would be all over a 25c Randonneur but as no such thing exists i'm wondering about these Panaracers?

    So any reviews?
