On average I think they're between 15 and 20 miles. It makes a hell of a difference if you ride in a group and have others to pace you. Some people have been riding for years, some of us for weeks. Get involved!

if anyone wants to join in for a ride, give me a bell on 079053563 six two
Eddie, I normally do a long(ish) ride on Saturdays or Sundays. The furthest I've been is about 40 miles and it was ok. It took longer than your 52 mile sprint though!
If you're short of company again, let me know - 07940 one two six two six one.

okay cool, cheers.
Reckon I'll give it a go. -

we never stray that far from town, people have dropped off the group before only to find them nestled in a comfy chair back at the pub :) it's all good. riding with a group is an immense boost too, plus you can steal aerodynamics by riding behind Will and Asseenon! :)

If it's nice tomorrow can we do the route that goes out down Babraham Road, then right up the hill to Shelford then on to Whittlesford, then through the villages then back in on the A10 onto Trumpington Road...

Last week people were saying they'd like to go somewhere new. This is the ride I go on over the winter if I don't really want to leave the city, but last week I came in almost last. When I'm a bit faster we should do this one. It's fast and it's awesome because it's all within the city limits.

Well, on the other ride (I'll come up with a super tough name for it another time), I was the slowest again. How about that?

stop beating yourself up, maybe your bike needs some good oiling at the chain and check your tyre pressure is super dense and stuff...
just don't think you're riding slowly while riding, just think you have to do whatever it takes to catch up with however is infront...and absolutely pedal it.

to support eddie, it could be something as minor as a rusty chain. do your wheels spin freely and then 'rock' back and forth with the weight of the valve (they should do)? is your chain too tight? is it rusty? are your wheels pointing straight, not skewed in the dropouts? sounds simple but any of these hinders speedy progress.
-
• #367
yeah any minor things like rusty chain will slow you down very very much
-
• #368
I just need to ride more which is good by me. I think I'll most likely start on the 'roids and pumping iron.

REMINDER************REMINDER*********REMINDER*********REMINDER************
ALLEYCAT THIS THURSDAY
(instead of normal ride)
come fit and prepared for a one to one and a half hour race. Approx 15-18 miles depending on the route you work out.You will need to be able to carry a pen somewhere during the ride (pens i will provide you with).
First one to check all the points and come back to the finish line wins.
Prizes are yet to be made (most likely gonna be shit, so if anyone wants to donate anything..)
There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and last places.**RULES:
You are not allowed to follow another member on the ride, each person has to find their own route.
All checkpoints have to be ticked/riden to. If you loose your pen it is your responsibility to find it. You must leave and return with the same pen (think of it as a package).
Fixed Only
You are not allowed to use public transport or grab onto moving vehicles. If you decide to get off your bike anytime during the race, you have to carry it with you.
I'm not responsible for anyone running red lights, going down the wrong way streets. Do what you gotta do, and have fun.**
I will tell you where all (9) checkpoints are at the start of the race. You will be racing against me as I know the shortest route to all of them; may the quickest man win.
Oh and I can't win anything, so don't worry about that. -
• #372
if we can't follow you and you know the route, then you will always win won't you
i vote for staggered start, 2 minutes between each rider, fastest riders first, slowest last.

Well, technically there is no route. it's just a load of random checkpoints all around cambridge (bridges).
I might and most likely will not have the shortest route. Im just gonna take the route that I have pre-calculated and memorised. You will have to do that quickly and on the spot.
I might leave ten minutes before the start for you to work out the route in all fairness.

• #374
that sounds quite cool
-
• #375
i don't get why Eddie is doing it
on a good day its like 20-30km, no worries though, its much easier when riding in a group
