  • I felt like I missed out on Thursday so I did this route in the sun today. It's getting warmer now, jeans are becoming a really stupid thing to ride in.

  • i think i will join you tomorrow night, see you all there!

  • Ive mapped out all the rides from the end of january that we had on our google map.
There really have only been five with the on and offs with snow etc. people just staying in pub, doing skids outside.

With that ive marked down The Maypole itself on the map, both polo courts for sunday and tuesday and started looking for possible polo alternative spaces (which i hope i will one day go round take pictures of and find the best spot for us to play polo in cambridge).

    here:

You can always come back to that link and see the ride we did.

We also seem to only be covering north and south, maybe start going east and west of cambridge a bit?

  • Eddie that's really awesome. I took Hills Road south the other evening all the way down to the A11, over Gog Magog. That is a killer, up and down, up and down, up and down. I got off at the Wandlebury hill and hiked up it... oh the shame. 50/17 for the fail.

  • i hope you had a good ride tonight, the happy hour in the nelsons head was too much to turn down, migh pop down sunday after lunch round my mums. I s there anywhere to park near where you play polo on sundays? as i will be coming by car from stives.

yeah theres a little parking lot just by it

  • I think this is the route from last night, it might go off in a few places. I didn't really know where the hell I was most of the time. 20ish miles...

  • yup that's pretty much it. we went straight on at the end of fulbourn old drift, joining coldhams lane a bit further up, but that's being picky! 21 miles? felt further, I think that's the longest one for a while. I have to say I'm impressed by the turn of speed we seem to be reaching. It's almost like we're getting good at this cycling lark!

  • cheers bro, ive added that to the googlemap

nice, i reacon 20-25 miles is a good range and people are getting used to the longer rides. Keep it up, and maybe if people are feeling in good shape we can add a few miles every other week or so.

    west, next?

  • Greg, Matt and I rode to Bishops Stortford a few weeks ago and that took a hell of a lot longer than last night but was only 6 miles more.

It's interesting not having much of a grasp of the area because for the majority of the ride last night I had no idea where we were or how far around we were.

I'm all up for long distance riding, I tend to ride a little slower when I'm on my own but it's good for me going out with others because you can use them as 'pacers'

  • phwoar i like that ride! fitness is already improving amongst us. however, 60 miles a day for ten days is a different beast to 20 miles once a week. perhaps we need to up the ante with our social rides to cater for training for ugley twatt/londres paris/dunwich dynamo. i'm thinking 25 miles of a thursday, and more miles another day/evening/night the same week?

night time cooler air, less traffic, more folk, more potential for drafting, better time of day to exercise, lots of factors make evening social rides far better distance coverers than day rides with fewer people. me and eddie took 6 hours to cycle great shelford - ugley - great shelford, including lunch stop, pit stops, energy stops, and photo ops. i reckon the same ride in the evening would take 3 hours.

  • true actually, although during the day you're enjoying the scenery and the sunshine, there are also cars that always push you into the ditchiest bit of the road and swing you with sidewinds as they come by.

You can cover bigger distances, quicker in the evening, fo sure, but its not exactly the most exciting time of the day to ride. You do have less sense of time and get hungry less often in the evenings though

For the Ugg-twatt though, if there will be someone driving with us, we might as well just do it during the day and take up a whole lane, ride and enjoy the surroundings.

  • Fingers crossed the weather is going to be good for tomorrow night. Just when we thought it was summer, I was wearing shorts all last week.

  • need to recouperate my body for next week, so won't be cycling/drinking too much, but will be down the pub for a pint and chat

  • im not going to be able to make the ride AGAIN or even the pub forgot i made other plans so catch you guys sunday

  • The ride tonight was really fun. It turns out, though, that I had infact broken my toe before I came down and have just spent god knows how long at addenbrookes with a bunch of drunks with smashed faces.

  • I saw you lot on your way back, outside ben haywards

...and whilst on your way to the hospital, I went over the handlebars. Wheeeeeey.

  • Cheers for that, chaps. Great fun. Hope the toe heals nicely, Matt.

  • Nice to meet you Steff , didn't get a chance to chat much as i had a friends leaving do to go to afterwards , hope to see you again on thursdays if you are about.

  • Evening peoples.

Got shown this way by a mate, Nath, so thought I would join up and say hello.
As soon as i'm back from uni for easter i think i might have to come along for a little ride with you guys. havnt been out on the fixie for ages due to there being hills in Wales and me not liking to cycle up them! haha :)
