  • there is nothing wrong with riding a ss!

  • I don't really coast much on my geared bikes, but I'm not trying to pull the wool over anyone's pawls.

well, thats kind of the idea behind gears too.

Tha you always have a gear you can be pedalling in, instead of freewheeling and being slower.

I personally bought a geared road bike for whizzing about after only ever riding BMX and a little MTB.

I just could get on with it at all!

I found freewheeling on a road bike terrifying, especially with their lousy brakes.

I also found road ratio gears totally pointless.

Gears make sense on a mtb, to get up really steep bumpy hills.

But on a slick wheeled road bike with no rolling resistance, you can start up on the hightest of ratios.

Id seen track racing before on the telly, and realised the had some sort of "fixed" drivetrain as they had no brakes.

I went to a trusty old second hand bike shop and asked about it, and guess what the old geezer pulls out the backroom?

A old double sided malliard fixed wheel. He then sold to me for £10

It took me a while to find a frame to put it on,

but once I did it was great.

  • Hmmmm

    I

    See

    interesting

    point

    :)

  • I did this on SS almost immediately after getting one. I started riding fixed soon after. I think I've used the SS on the other side of the hub once after that, when in the sticks and it was hilly, to have a lower gear and be able to coast. It felt funny.

MA3k I reckon we all do this, there's nowt wrong with writing a load of bile and then deleting it.

    Interesting take on things...

  • Sometimes I simulate flaming on forums by writing heaps of vitriolic bile in the text field.

Then I erase and replace it with something banal.

    lol

Yeah.. I had to stop myself writing something (for a change) :)

Something about trying to keep up with the sudden changes of pace in a crit/RR?

Something about training load variety in samey terrain?

Something about not attempting to nip into a gap on the Elephant & Castle rdbt from a standing start in a 86.5" on the way back from Herne Hill?

Something about flying down a 5 mile descent with hairpins when your mates are all doing 30-55mph?

    Something or other.

  • I pretty much ride like this all the time, just because once up to speed I like to keep spinning.
Also, gonna get the fixed on the road soon so kinda getting used to riding over speed bumps and turns etc whilst still pedaling - not the same i know!

  • there is nothing wrong with riding a ss!

Yes there is.. if you are on a 10% climb..

  • +1 for freewheeling on a road bike being scary.
i was riding a geared road bike a few weeks ago and it felt like i just wasn't gonna be able to stop! even compared to riding brakeless normally.
maybe i'm just not used to brakes any more. although i've only been without one for a couple of months.

  • in dark alleyways I often pretend I am on a brompton

  • in dark alleyways I often pretend I am on a brompton

    that's digusting!
    shame on you.

You'd probably either rip your leg muscles to shreds or be a long bloody streak of road kill by the bottom! :)

  • there's also a lot of people not on fixed doing the 'holding the bars right by the stem' as a fixed style affectation -

That could be habit Daddy Wayne? I ride my geared bike like this on the times i get it out. you get used to the view sitting up. Just look a twat when you got to stop. well i say twat more a mess. i say mess its more surprised.

  • that's digusting!
    shame on you.

whats worse is the cotton/polyester mix suits i change into before i do it

  • there is nothing wrong with riding a ss!

Girls in occupied countries got their hair cut off after the war if they had ridden an SS. ;)

  • there is nothing wrong with riding a ss!

Yes there is.. if you are on a 10% climb..

Yeah, 46x17/18 fixed is perfect for that :p

  • I pretend I'm on a Strida.

Mind you, my bike has 20 gears and two brakes.

  • I often simulate fellatio with motorists.

it leaves them feeling dirty and shameful

  • i often stimulate myself.....................oops, wrong forum, forget everything i said i was just talking shit honest.....

  • i often stimulate myself.

    that's what your mum said.

  • I often debate with myself whether I prefer riding fixed or ss, then debate whether I should be debating this. I just can't decide whether because I prefer fixed to ss most days it means I should feel shallow and vain like I think others may see me, or if on the odd day I wouldn't mind riding ss I feel guilty because ss feels like cheating and lazy in some way because there are no gears to adjust to perfection while waiting at the lights.

Does this make me a schizofrenger or a procrastenatenger? I can't decide :(

  • sometimes when i'm on the bus i pretend to be riding a bike.

people wonder why i'm wearing a helmet and lycra, and indicating with my arms when the bus goes around corners, but i don't worry about them.
