  • Remember as well that it takes energy to make noise, so if the drive train is noisy you're wasting energy ;-)

  • I'm going to get a Phil Wood sprocket after reading about.

Totalcycling.com have them for £29. Are there different models because I've seen them with a stepped inner and some flush? Ala…

  • I like the wipperman connex chains. the 100 is a cheep run in to the ground chain @ £6.99, for £9.99 you get nickel plating (108) and also the option of a zinc plated chain for the lazy winter days, also around the £9.99 mark.

I suspect a phil sprocket I had was not perfectly concentric. Replacing it solved a binding issue at one part of the revolution. A mate then tried the phil sprocket on his bike and got the same problem.

  • wear an ipod?

    Good plan!

one is 1/8 and the other 3/32

  • KMC 710 Superlight with titanium Nitride coating 1/8th = absolutely silent (so far!).

One thing to bear in mind is that the chain is only one part of the equation, the chain it's self makes no noise when traveling along a flat (the top and bottom of your drive chain) - it is only when it engages with the cog and chainring that we hear noise. So your question should really be aimed at find a silent drive chain (cog / chain / chain ring / oil / maintenance).

    Whisper quiet set up.

you run it slack then :{)
