  • quiet chains don't come in 1/8"

  • I was quite happy with the cheaper Izumi chain. also thick wet grease will make
it quiter than the really liquid one that dries out quickly.

  • KMC z-chain - I think they're originally BMX but they are plenty good, and I've always found them pretty quiet.

  • +1 KMC Z510HX
    under £4 from cyclebasket

  • wear an ipod?

  • Anyone tried one of those DID chains off hubjub?

  • I've been running a 1/8" DID chain for the last couple of weeks and it's a little on the noisy side. It seem to be getting worse as well...

  • The HKK is quieter than the DID, which is quieter than the Izumi's.
Just mounted a DID and it's ok, but not as quiet as my old HKK.

  • Bring the noise! You should appreciate the track chain's noise. It serves as an early warning to peds that a mohawk, tattooed, drunk, brakeless psycho is coming..

  • +1 KMC Z510HX
    under £4 from cyclebasket

    • :)

Never looked backed since finding these - lasted as long as an Izumi ESH(?) uber-toughness jobbie I had, quieter, not in tasteless gold colour, less than a quarter of the price, etc.

  • +1 on izumi

  • KMC 710 Superlight with titanium Nitride coating 1/8th = absolutely silent (so far!).

One thing to bear in mind is that the chain is only one part of the equation, the chain it's self makes no noise when traveling along a flat (the top and bottom of your drive chain) - it is only when it engages with the cog and chainring that we hear noise. So your question should really be aimed at find a silent drive chain (cog / chain / chain ring / oil / maintenance).

    Whisper quiet set up.

  • wear an ipod?

    And that ! :)

  • I might start greasing my chains... just for a laugh ya know.. wonder how much road grit I can collect in one wet ride? :)

I have seen your chain, I have touched it, I have checked it's tension and I can happily report that it has never been serviced, oiled or cleaned and estimate it holds between 6 and 8 lbs of road dirt.

  • I found the KMC chains to be pretty good, plus they're cheap!
The 710 and the 710SL are nice, but come out a tad wider than your average 1/8" chain. The cheaper 510 seems quieter to me...or even better, the 510Hx; a tougher, slightly beefier version...been running this on 2 bikes and no complaints!
Of course though, it goes without saying...make sure your chainline in spot on and both chainring and cog are 1/8" specific; if one is meant for 3/32" chains then it's gonna make hella racket, innit!

  • ^yes... as above...^

There's nothing wrong with cheap KMC 410, 510 etc. Noise is most likely the result of a crap chainline, a wrong width cog/chain combo, or something.

You can run 3/32" chainring with 1/8" chain & cog and all will be silent. I do.

  • for quietness - thick oil is your friend, chainsaw oils is the thickest and would grant you a quiet ride but a the bike chain would fill with crap in no time.

  • quiet chains don't come in 1/8"

Forget what everyone else has said, Skullhead is right.

    Failing that, sort your chainline.

  • convert your bike to a belt drive :D quiet as fook, guaranteed ;)

  • Take your chain off and only ride downhill. Solved my noisy driveline problems..

  • just adding to this thread rather than starting a new one.

after 18months and 6k+ miles my izumi chain needs replacing. it's the middle range one ESH?
do i buy another one the same or something different?
i don't want a screw connector but one with a clip link.
any recommendations or a good place to buy?

  • izumi's are cheap at condor i find. might of been cyclebasket or sjs that had a special recently.

  • probably get the same chain from condor then, working nearby on thursday.
