  • Yeah I did.
You're doing exactly what you mocked, don't you get it? That's about the dumbest thing I've seen/ heard for a while.
Why don't you come on a ride and enjoy the non-internet side of the forum (which IMHO is better by far than the forum cos people don't get so fucking aggro all the time)?
Oh yeah cos you love the (faux) anonymity of the forum too much, oh well.

  • Can't really believe that this all kicked off yesterday... a bank holiday... sunny...

I was out riding a bicycle, then drinking ales.

  • Yeah I did.

    YOU miss the point.

There isn't anonymity on this forum because of the localization and certain threads.

Basically Iv'e been told that because I'm a newby I'm lame and my opinion isn't valid.

The cornering thing is a valid point but unfortunately their is an extreme bias on the forum and people have resulted to insults and intimidation in order to defend that.

Why then would I want to go on a ride with such guys?

  • He must have had a tough childhood... being abused by people on the internet, now you just can't penetrate that tough shell. sob
fixed gear riders pedalling through a corner is not the same as a motorcycle accelerating, it is the same as a motorcyclist not pulling the clutch.

  • at least mashton has a reason to be indoors.
I came back to find this thread, after a day spent in a library.
    same deal today.
Best weather we've had for ages, think I might have to go riding, and leave a bit of revision.

    Good point Prav.
And there is not one racing driver/rider EVER that has intentionally gone around a corner with clutch in.

    ohohohoh!! Did I win? ;-)
    take that everyone else!

  • people have resulted to insults

First three insults in this thread:

    sheep shagger
    fascist
    cunt

all from the same source - you.

And I don't? you know nothing about me. do you know why you know nothing about me?

you been too busy with your presumptions. This started out with mashton and myself but others have jumped in throwing abuse at me, picking on the minority. same old same old

Dodgy ground now.....you assume they were all meant as insults and have assumed other comments towards me wernt.

How can you claim to know mine and others intentions?

Hmm, no, I didn't. I don't know how to put this, but I haven't been arguing with your cornering points, because (and its the same for me when I ski- which I do a hell of alot of) I can't visualise my action off of the bike.

However, I was taking issue with your attitude, which seems to have moved on from arguing- which is fine (though much of this argument was puerile name calling)- to threats.

    Threats on the internet, pathetic.

Reasons you'd want to go on a ride:
1.Riding is kinda the point of this forum.

    1. people are nice if you're nice to them
    2. Rides on your own suck, rides with people are excellent fun.
  • And I don't? you know nothing about me. do you know why you know nothing about me?

Mashton got hit by a car, and has titanium in his arms. I'm guessing any grumpiness in his posts may stem from that.
    So what's your sob story?

In fact, I don't care. It's sunny so I'm going outside, for a ride.
    see ya.

EDIT: In no way did I mean this to sound like it was taking lightly mashton's crash. It sounds pretty fucking horrible, and something I've thus far managed to avoid (touch wood)

Same bike same rider same ratio flip flop ss /fg same corner same conditions.

    Anyone tried it?

I'm not down. read the my other posts

  • Ok,
From you're posts, it seems you've never ridden a fixed gear.
Note, this could be a misreading.
    Is that right?

  • Same bike same rider same ratio flip flop ss /fg same corner same conditions.

    You haven't tried either, apparently.

Also, if you were as clever as you think you are, then you'd know that ^^^ isn't possible, so you can put that silly point in the same compost heap as your " The idea is not to get it wrong, fg or ss" argument.

  • I voted fixed because it's more fun and I need fun as I get older but I'd lay my grannies pension on the fact I could ride a freewheel with good brakes faster through town/traffic.

p.s. - My grannies pension is £10 if anyone wants a gamble...

  • This is the strangest thread ever!?

    Is that right?

I have previously ridden fixed. I don't currently and have not for some time.

My understanding is that there haven't been any leaps of technology in relation to fixed-gear bikes for sometime now. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Best weather we've had for ages, think I might have to go riding, and leave a bit of revision.

That was what always got to me when i was a student ... the fact that all the hard work/revision/dissertation had to be done when the sun was out, the beer was flowing and the girls were wearing not much ...

    I got a 2ii ...

  • The really sad thing is that I have been contemplating going fixed again as I'm going to be in London for at least another year.

I use other forums. other bike and production forums. Never been bullied into a corner by extremists before.

I don't want to tar everyone with the same brush, but its fucking hard. There is such a strong bias here. Heaven forbid anyone suggest that there are other options. And as for newbies!!

25 years of cycling. First time I have ever been put off.

I'll tell it as it is from my own experience. Mashton, from my encounter with him, got his karma, apparently karma doesn't care much for time.

  • Come on hippy, your the only one so far to switch there brain on for this debate.

do motorcyclists, f1, tour car driver put there foot down on the accelerator to gain more traction through corners?

They brake before the corner and they don't put the power down until they can put it on and leave it on.

And yes I am aware car tyres can aqua plane in the rain.

If you have to correct your self in the corner then you got it wrong. The idea is not to get it wrong, fg or ss.

Errr...........motorcyclists, f1, touring car racers etc all apply the throttle when they are cornering as it aids their traction. That is the basis behind my thought processs for this discussion. That is what left foot braking came about so both brake and throttle can be applied through a corner.

I was wondering if the small contact patch of a bike tyre makes this technique valid on a fixed wheel....along with all the others that have been offered up to the discussion.

  • Ok, let me lay my cards on the table straight and simple:

    1. One of your posts sounds a lot like you are considering going fixed for the first time. I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions.

    2. Prior to being embroiled in this argument, your posts have quite a sense of humour.

    3. This thread seems to have brought out the worst in people (myself included) and that saddens me.

    4. If this 'cliquey' attitude puts you off cycling, how are you still as every type of cycling I've ever come across seems to have this inherent cliquishness. This forum is by far and away the least cliquey cycling group I've been involved with (from downhill MTB to Triathlons- before you ask).

Finally, no one is an extremist here, you did start out fairly aggressively (calling mashton a cunt and all), so actually its a bit ridiculous you hitting out at extremists when your actions are just as (if not more so) extreme.

You're a bit like Israel, basically.

  • i'm an extremist
