Its not really a full on restoration, hence the thread title, but my black rims have gotten really tatty and scratched over the winter, also they are/were black so the scratches show up more and look like shit.
I would respray them/get them resprayed but the same thing will inevitably happen again eventually so i was thinking of stripping whats left of the black finish and just having the bare aluminium exposed..
Does anyone have any experience of this? Research suggests paint stripper and steel wool will work, but someone warned me this could make them look worse.. Any suggestions on how to make the rims look good again, sans paint?
ta very much

paint stripper works best, no need for wire wool (that may scratch them more) then rinse them off give them a polish
Ill UTFS, build on here stripped an polished a pair of deep V's

paint stripper wont work on anodisation use oven cleaner for that. there are many threads on cleaning anodised metal

on second look yea, i think it might be anodised - its got that matt look/feel, its a h plus son in case anyone can confirm?
i did some photoshop visuals at the weekend though and i think i prefer black, just wish they weren't so tatty now..
visuals.. since this photo i've removed the decals and rear brake and put risers on it

i think you are being a bit pedantic. its a bike, its not meant to look like the virgin mary.
failing that.

HA!
whats the fun of owning a bike unless you constantly want it to look different, be lighter, have better components, be carbon fibre, then steel, then decide that alu is best, then see someone on titanium and can't sleep for a week because you wish you had it. you will get black and then in a week wish you had mid section rims or had bought open pros instead. Thats how i am an way

I actually tried that, i bought this one:
It didn't look so great though - the ink is shiny, and you still get the black-silver-black because of the braking surface..
I prefer fastidious to pedantic.

The paint on the rim has started to look a bit tired and sorry for itself. I'm thinking of either repainting it or just getting rid of the paint all together.
What is the best way to take the paint off? I was thinking either paint stripper or would something like wire wool work just as well?
If I'm going to re-paint the rim do I have to use a spray or are there any paints out there that are suitable to be applied with a brush?
Cheers.

I recently got this bike. The front rim has worn through consistently on what was a black rim. The rear hasn't and is patchy all the way around - it doesn't look right.
Any ideas how I could safely remove the remaining paint?
The rims are campag omega, if that helps.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

sure its paint and not andodized? if its anodized, which it probably is, you need to soak it in oven cleaner.

Yeh I guess it I'd anodised. Would that allow me to take the paint off the rim edge only? I don't want it off the whole thing...

The best way is to continue braking until it all wears off then :-P. You could use wire wool, but why risk damaging it?
Jabba,
what did you do in the end? I'm thinking of doing the same to my green deep V, I'm pretty sure its easier to take the wheel apart first!
