In a ward near me the Conservative got in with 30% of the vote. 70% of voters wanted a centre-left councillor (green, labour, lib-dem) but they ended up with a Tory.
Silly system.

Silly system.
My ward is a safe Labour seat, so it was always going to end up with Labour in control.
For the non-Labour votes, 15% voted Tory, who then got 3 seats. 16% voted Green, and they only got 1 seat out of that.
Not a single UKIP seat in this ward, though, which is nice.

benevolent dictatorship? or meritocracy

Well democracy is quite a broad term. It's a decent system. But democracy does not equal fair, like many seem to think. Now I'm not suggesting a dictatorship. I'm just pointing out that their are flaws in a democratic system just like any other system. A certain system can be democratic yet very unfair while another is equally as democratic but very fair.
Personally I think every system can be exploited. It's not the system that makes things go well, it's the people in power and equally the common man who brings them and keeps them in power.

Impossible to disagree that people are becoming far too old.
Compulsory horse riding until 70, then straight to the guillotine. But not on the bus, make them walk.

I voted, fair few racist sounding parties on the Basildon ballot papers, "The For Britain Movement", "English Democrats" peppered amongst the usual UKIP and independents that were booted from the mainstream parties for various reasons.
More to the point, why the fuck are there sooooooo many wheelie bins!? Was walking down the road today and it suddenly hit me. It's crazy when you think about it. Most houses here are split into 2 or 3 flats. That makes it 9 wheelie bins in the tiny front garden.
I don't understand. If they collect mixed recycling that has to be properly sorted then why not just have one bin for everything and another for biodegradables. If they have to sort it anyway then they might as well go through everything and recycle much more. Plus that's one less bin, one less collection, one less complication.
