  • so here's a question for all those of you who have sprayed your frames: how much did it cost in paint to get a decent finish?
i'm just curious as exploring the options for re-painting a frame and don't know whether it's worth going the armourtech way (i think it probably is) or just taking the "cheap" option of diy.

    thanks

If done properly - strip, sand, clean, primer, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand, clearcoat, sand, clearcoat, sand, clearcoat, sand.

It will cost you about the same as getting it sprayed at VAZs.

The big thing powdercoating has going for it, for me at least, is that there is no drying time - ignore the writing on your rattle can that says it will be dry on 24 hours, a wet spray job at home takes days/weeks to properly cure.

  • ditto plus 1 yep its really isnt that cheap... i was thinking the same before i went down the rattle can route.

1, you can strip and start again.
2, it doesn't feel as precious
3, on really small components that you wont touch (stem) works a treat.
4, you get the colour you want.
5, like building you can say you did it yourself
    6....um go to armourtech

  • Financially speaking it isn't worth it doing it yourself, it must have cost about £25-£30 in materials not to mention the hours of labour too. Much easier and quicker to get it done professionally. But you get an idea in your head sometimes...' Hmmmm I could do that'. And now I have sprayed mine and am looking at the bike before I started am begining to wish I had left it as was. Now I have lost that 35 year old patina :-(

  • Thanks Tynan my friend. Sounds straight forward on the carbon job. I was a bit nervous since everyone I chatted to said 'get it professionally done or your fork will look like an 8 year old did it.'

  • I'm Nitromorsing my old raleigh frame tonight to respray white, leaving the lugging just laquered i'll post photos tomorrow =)

  • Time to hijack a thread again, I'm afraid.

Anyone know of a decent place I can respray my bike in the Shoreditch/Hackney area? I don't mean a professional sprayer, I intend rattlecan the thing myself and just need a site for the job. I have read all the arguments against DIY spraying, but it's a budget decision and I need something to sort out the rust asap and I'm prepared to acccept a dodgy finish for now.

Yeah, I know the question is a bit daft, but I live in a flat so I can't do it at home. I am just wondering if anyone can suggest respraying it in a community workshop somewhere or perhaps anyone know of a workshop, garage or quiet back yard they'd let me use? I don't intend to do the full procedure of 30 odd coates or whatever.

  • do it in the street outside your flat.

  • do it in the street outside your flat.

I might do that you know...

If I go real hardcore I can just follow the Hammerite advice in the thread above, no primer etc needed. The user guideline says minimum 15 min between each coat and 4 coats suggested as appropriate. That means the job's done in 1 - 2 hours max? Yeah, I think I will. Since I'm being such a cheapskate I guess I'll at least make up for it by sanding it properly first.

Sandblasting can be done later if I reckon the frame is worth it.

  • Its too cold, the paint wont fix or finish smooth, needs to be warm, dry and dust free else you will blow shit on to the frame..not litterally expele fetal matter but the pressure from the tin will blow dust into the air and onto the paint.

You can do one coat an hour, you need 3 base coats and 3 top (min) you need a 1ft square space so i'd recommend clearing a space in your flat/house and pick up some dust sheets. or and set up a rig to hang the frame to allow it to dry even.
then close all windows. close all doors and spray like fuck. you'll find mixing this with the occasional joint will see you through till mid week.

  • 15 mins per coat??? i leave 40 and then a quick frame inspection, good 10 mins rattle then go for itp

  • "1ft square space"

come on now....... thats just silly.

  • We not talking about dyecast models??
Have i got my forums mixed up again.. I better go and delete that post about peds on the warld of warcraft forum...

  • Flattening off with wet and dry between coats give you a better end result IMO.

  • very first bike rattle canned

  • talking from experience... the paint will chip really quick my last job lasted 2 weeks... and your heart will break....
Getting it powder coated cost 40 pounds... 2 can of good spring can cost 16 and the you probably have to redo it every few months

  • My mates done two bikes and both have come out shit. It's just not worth it.

  • Whether you powercoat or re-spray I recon the forks and parts of the frame will still get chipped, just from knocks against bike racks etc.. Powdercoating is obviously better granted.

I had an idea about wrapping the forks in vinyl. You know the stuff that they make sticky signs out of - see through but pretty thick. That way you still get a nice colour but its also protected.. Has anyone tried it?

Some one did one recently it looked very good, can't find it yet. Give me time.

  • Nice one Andy! I'm gonna try that out, when the new racer gets back from the shop..

  • I am a professional sprayer. Automotive/fine art/and bike frames. Using the best quality 2pack paints/etch/primers etc.
Get in contact for details. I can collect your frame in london and spray it at my bodyshop in essex. I make regular trips.

I can also spray all kind of candies, metal flakes, pearls etc - Full custome work and super finish.

A proper job stands out amongst a crowd of amateur work from miler away. I can prep and spray a frame from £50. Full custom finishes (involving up to 15 layers of paint) will cost around £120
2paint paint systems are very very durable. Not QUITE as a powdercoat, but not too far off and a MUCH better finish! Completely smooth like glass.
Dont believe everything you hear about paint finishes, alot of it is made up from internet forums.
Get in contact for a pro job.
