A re-spray and new decal job will cost, probably more than the frame is worth to be honest.
Better to get fine wire-wool and rub down the rust blisters 'till the metal is shiny. Paint on a little primer (lightly rub that down), then the best match modelers enamel you can find (lightly rub down again). Now wax like crazy.
That's what I'd do.
Got any pictures?

not as yet. but i'll have a go.
i had thought the primer / match option would be the way forward. -

hope you are good at spray painting...:D
If Hammerite do your colour.. they paint straight over rust.. it is a paint, undercoat and primer all in one!!!
but if you are bad at spray painting... your bike will be buggered like mine :D

have just resprayed my frame, went down the rattle can route. You can get quite good results as long as you invest some time and effort. follow that old adiage about the three secrets to good painting....preparation,preparation and preparation.

^^ what he said. its 95% about prep on a home job

Also worth a mention is to get yourself a good respirator, some twat who recently painted his frame got half way thru before realising he wasn't wearing one. Now I feel like i have a really bad man cold, DUH!

I do the - hold your breath - spray a bit - run away and breath - repeat until frame looks shit - method.

Since we're talking about spraying here, I have a dilemma you guys might be able to solve. Long story short, my first fixie is that rust coloured Langster. I hate the skull decals they included in the paint job. I want to repaint the frame but the fork is carbon! Do you have any tips for carbon respraying?

did you spray the bit (technical term) where the BB goes??
-
• #13
nice colour, what's the finish like up close?
did you spray the bit where the BB goes?? ;)
-
• #14
yeah looks like you did... spray *that bit. *I jammed abit of news paper in that bit... for fear of thread jamming...
yeah and the spray runaway approach is good, my dad would swear by it... and for welding too the old close the eyes trick... you should see him do a dot to dot. -

Theres a few imperfections up close but its quite shiney, not too bad for a first attempt i think. theres a bit of overspray inside the BB shell but I can clean that off with a wire brush before putting the BB back in. You can just make out where I sawed off the cable guides but I smoothed it down and used 3 coats of high build primer, flattening it off between coats. It's splattered with dead puppy blood on the other side.

It is pretty straight forward to spray carbon (just don't powdercoat it) - usual thing, very light keying with a super fine grit paper - you don't want to remove any material just the paint something to mechanically grip too - then hit it with a few very light coats of colour + clearcoat (if you want).

Is that the frame you painted with Smoothrite Whatamidoing?
-
• #25
yep
white one first...then the black one...
was going to use black hammerite... bit wasn't brave enough... may be next time
it's only an old raleigh frame. it's a lovely shade of blue. with a nice white only bit where the badge is. and chrome.
then i saw a spot or two of rust where the chain has fallen down and scratched the paint.
i want to keep the colours i've got and the badge details.
any tips on fixing the rust, i know i can sand it off, but where can i get the frame resprayed to a similar colour? while keeping the details i want? powder coating will involve sand blasting right?
masking it off and getting someone with a sprayer to spray it would work. wouldn't it? i'm sure it would.
any body in the sw area would be great.
