2008-04-23 - Rider Down, Another bike bites the dust

Riding along a residential road this morning on the way to the supermarket. When a volvo 4by4 tried to overtake, only he failed to see the bollards in the middle of the road thus forcing him to swerve into me. The next 10 seconds are a blur. When I finally stop moving I don't really feel hurt. It is only when I try to get up that I see that pedals are still clipped to my shoes alas with no bike, and my left arm is facing the wrong way and is a rather fetching shade of red.

The funny/scary thing is that the driver did not stop apparently he sped off with my bike jammed underneath. The police later told me that bike eventually damaged the car thus forcing him to stop and seek assistance.

I have just left the hospital with a now fixed dislocated shoulder and 184 stitches with a promise of skin graphs in the near future. Yet I feel quite happy which I have just put down to the painkiller they gave me.

Every time I read one of these accident stories I think, "But for the grace of God..." This sounds like the sort of crash that you had no chance of avoiding. You were stuffed as soon as you got on your bike and that's quite scary.

What happened to the remains of your bike?

Bad luck, but your out of hospital in a day and by the sounds of your post they got the driver so sue the fucker and press hit and run criminal charges as well.

It was along Duke Street. To be honest I don't feel all that bad, though that is probably the pain killers doing there job. I discharged myself early as I have somewhat of a phobia towards hospitals (long sad story). My sister (whose a med student) is staying over tonight just to make sure.

The police told me they have a couple of witnesses so hopefully i'll be able to get some sort of compensation.

Make sure that you speak to the police ASAP and ask that they prosecute for careless driving and failing to stop and/or failing to report an accident all criminal offences. Ask a mate to take pictures of the accident scene, your injuries and your damaged property. It sounds like this driver will say that you swerved and they had no chance of missing you. Then sue the wanker...

Yep even if you don't feel too bad the fact that the driver left you for dead means he deserves punishment both criminal as well as financial.

Fucking terrible driving. Swirving into you to avoid bollards?? The fact that the brakes weren't enough to stop them shows that, beside the fact that they are clearly spectacularly short-sighted, they were also going too fast anyway. Absolutely disgusting. I hope the driver is thoroughly ashamed of themselves. I'd want them to never get in a car again.
