  • i am thinking of selling my d40x kit before i go to hong kong in june
and upgrade to a d80, camreas are alot cheaper there ;-)
pm me if u are interested, thanks

  • My 2pence = D80. as well as the features/reasons mentioned earlier in the thread, the display on the top part of the camera body helps massively when changing shutter speed etc.

  • My 2pence = D80

As can be seen from the photo I posted earlier. My 2pence >> Your 2pence. ;)

A rule of thumb that I was told which turned out to be quite true. Nikon bodies are usually a bit cheaper compared to their Canon equivalents however Nikon lenses quickly start to become expensive compared to their Canon equivalents. I priced an equal kit and Nikon did turn out quite a bit more expensive.

Another thing is that Nikons lenses aren't as easy to distinguish as good lenses like Canons are. It's easy to know that an L lens is going to be a good one but with Nikon it's not as clear cut. This is good for Nikon lenses if you're going to be targeted regularly by thieves but it's not good if you're a mindless consumer who wants to buy the lenses with the red stripe on them.

  • Canon G9 OR Sigma DP-1 OR Ricoh GR Digital II?

  • Not sure if this is any help, but got this email address from a note in Silverprint.
Some one is selling a Canon 10D with lens, case etc for £300.
    Email them here... info@silviaboarini.com

    Hope thats of some help.

  • 10D is quite old. That body only 20D for £250 is maybe a better start than a 10D with lens c/w extra garbage for £300.

  • 10D's aren't compatible with the digital-specific lenses that Canon now do. I know coz I own one.
I'd go for the 20D or above for not much more ££

  • Bit of a thread ressurection, but after doing some playing with my dad's old 35mm SLR and finding developing costs a little painful, I'm back in the market for a dSLR. I'm starting to lean towards the 40D now as I've read a lot of good things about it and it's available with the 17-85mm kit lens which I've heard is a shedload better than the 18-55 that the 450D tends to come with. I'm also going on holiday in a few days so can pick up the camera at a duty-free place, which makes the 40D & lens about £590 after cashback; I thought that seemed like a good deal.

Is this a wise decision? I mean it seems to be quite a step up from the 400D in terms of cost, but the improved lens offsets that to an extent I guess and I'm after something I can treasure and hopefully keep running for many years. Playing around with a 35mm with no autofocus or auto-anything has also whetted my apetite for something I can really fiddle about with.

I was also considering getting the 50mm F1.8 a little down the line to give me some more flexibility indoors without resorting to a flash - is this the best option, or should I be looking elsewhere?

  • I've got a 1D MkII for sale ;)
Great for skateboarding photography and of course FixedGearFreestyle photography.
Too heavy and expensive for everyday 'amateur' use, that's why I've got a 5D as well (which I am keeping).

Lenswise it's a good idea to get some non-zoom lenses as they will help you with your photography. Limitations are a good way to stimulate creativity as you'll be forced to work with what you've got and can rely on the whole wide angle to tele range in one lens.
The 50 1.8 is okay but as you progress you'll find you might want to replace it with the 1.4 as the 1.8 has quite horrible bokeh (<-google). It doesn't really matter when you're learning but as you progress you might find that is something that you don't like. Although maybe the whole bokeh thing is a question of justifying spending a lot of money on lenses ;)

Personnally if you're undecided between the 40D and the 400D/450D and you can afford it, I'd go for the 40D.

  • Just by way of an update, I ended up making the jump from my dad's OM-1 to a 40D and 17-85 IS USM a couple of weeks back. I'm really pleased I did (the development costs were ruining me) and I've had a wicked time learning photoshop & hdr etc. Splashed out on a polarizing filter (hoping it arrives in time for my trip to egypt) but also...

...which should let me use all the olympus om lenses on the eos! This means I'll have a 50mm (80mm equivalent) F1.4 lens for portraits (the canon 50mm F1.8 was next on my shopping list) and a 200mm tele. Best £18 ever spent hopefully...

  • get a d300... not THAT much more, and so much more camera!

I got one of these yesterday too !

Well a Nikon to Canon one anyway.

  • Many people I know who have bought a dslr after owning a compact seem to take far less pictures.
Don"t leave it at home because its to big and heavy.
    Commit!

agreed. i am just now buying a little point and shoot because they are much more conducive to actual picture-taking - you can carry it with you at all times, and are much more likely to dig it out to take some pics.

  • My DSLR sits in the cupboard 99% of the time and I use my girlfriend's little Canon Ixus for most things. Fits in a pocket.

  • yeah, i use your GF's little ixus for most things too

+1 my slr sits on a shelve in it's little protective case and i use a cheapo compact more often than not.

You wouldn't know how to operate it without the manual and some tuition.

  • a bit impenetrable, is it?

  • Not for someone with my talents. I just think you'd struggle.
Perhaps you should stick with disposable cameras..

  • Point and shoot?

  • get a d300... not THAT much more, and so much more camera!

A D300 with kit lens costs £900 more than I paid for the 40D + lens. And it has the wrong name on the front ;)

but its a bloody amazing camera, and that lens is just soooo bloody useful.

  • So's the hubble space telescope, but unfortunately I couldn't stretch to that either.

  • Just got a Canon 400d from that Canon Outlet on eBay.
Got it for £273! In perfect condition. Really good camera.
Swapped the stock lens for a Canon 28-135mm with Image Stabilizer.
    Really chuffed with it.
Arrived within 2 days and has a 1 year warranty.
