There's nothing wrong with a langster. At all.
There's something wrong with the colour scheme that was put on the "London" langster and that is part of the global marketing campaign from Specialized, but nearly everyone on this site agrees that in the price range the langster provides a great starter bike.
Why starter? Because a lot of people here customise bikes, build bikes, and want a bike to match them and reflect them. And it's felt that by building and maintaining your own bike that you really have created self-sufficient transport and will have an understanding and appreciation of the machine you ride.
Why's the paint job so bad? Well mostly it's because it's hard to connect it to London (or even England or the UK or GB), and it looks like a cheap cash-in attempt on Specialized's part. As if just slapping a union jack on the top tube would make it 'cool'. It was cool enough before, now it just looks tacky. They should've gone for racing green, brooks-esque saddle and things that nodded towards the heritage of british racing and manufacturing.
But the bike itself, it's good... for the price and utility.
If you have just enough cash to buy a langster, and you are a bit intimidated by building your own bike at this point and just want to try riding fixed/singlespeed... then the langster remains one of the best introductions to it all.

Perhaps not.
But this entire page and everything on it, all of the other images, all of the text, all of the javascript and css... all added together, weigh 197KB.
Your one image was 8 times larger than everything else on this page combined.
Over a third of people who visit the site still have dial-up connection speeds of around 44kbps.
Without your image, this page takes them 30 seconds to download and view. With your image it takes closer to 5 minutes.
All I'm saying is that you can show consideration to other forum users by not directly embedding images above 200KB.
Cable, DSL and LAN connections may be all that you experience (me too for the most part), but while a lot of people still have slow connections, let's not make it worse for them.
And they're unlikely to go away, not all slow connections are dial-up, that's just the equivalent speed. It's most likely that they're using iPhones, other mobiles, wireless connections, etc.

i know dave i was messing about...it wont happen again.
i bet if we done a poll all the dial-up fiends and iphone monkeys would happily wait 5 minutes to see the 'forkacus' animation :) -

By linking, they can choose to. By embedding, you've given them no choice but to wait.

I think its lovely still waiting for the bike photochop....
if you reduced it to 5 frames from 34 it would be small enough to embed - 1/4 mb? -

Agreed, it has all the charm and class of a mini customized for estate agents..
I picked up a discounted filmore after one stolen and one slipping conversion project (1950's scrap yard challange!) but with some adjustments it handles really well. just not the quickest -

I think there's something particularly stupid about putting the Tube map on the London L******r, given that the reason a lot of people cycle in London is that they hate public transport. Saying that, NYC got it in the rear pipe, too - do New York cyclists have any greater enemy than the Yellow Cab?
I'm with VB on this one - it could have been so much more British. Hell, the standard 2008 Langster is British Racing Green, for pete's sake.
For the record, I think the Tube map is one of the most iconic (and brilliant) designs ever.

well, that's how being iconic works, innit?
-
• #149
I think it's brilliant, because it somehow makes it look like the Tube makes sense.
