I just saw this (and copped a pair), absolute massive bargain. No idea how good they are for riding in yet but I doubt there is a better value pair of jeans anywhere.

maybe for doing a time trial or mount ventoux but the are fine for around town, when you go into a shop or bar you dont look and feel like a tadpole. -
• #260
but there are items of clothing available that are neither tadpole like in appearance or made from a fabric (cotton) which is unsuitable for cycling clothing (especially when wet).

Right now I'm loving the Duffer selvedge. £60 for handloomed 14oz denim can't be bad. The cut is a bit wide for me but it just means they can be rolled up.
The Uniqlo selvedge is also bargainous. And anything selvedge lasts a million times longer.

Have people seen that Charge Bikes are launching a new clothing brand, including some waterproof jeans? Not sure what to make of these yet. I was going to get some Swrve jeans, but they're out of stock in my size, anyway I might hold out until I've seen more about these. Looks interesting. Quite like the look of that wool jacket too.

waterproof jeans would be disastrous... waterproofing = not breathable = smelly from the inside
-
• #268
Well they're described as jeans, but it says they're made from some other material and that they're moisture wicking and breathable, so maybe not so disatrous. We'll have to wait and see I guess.
No point in keeping water out if they get you all sweaty in the process so as well as being waterproof, they are also breathable – the material's weave being much tighter on the outer layer to help prevent water getting through, but more open on the inner layer to let sweat out.

When you've shredded the crotch out of one pair (it's gonna happen...) don't just fling 'em, cut the legs into square patches and stitch one to the crotch of a a cheapie pair from JS / Tesco et al (if you can't manage this then be nice to your Mum and she'll probably do it for you; it's the bloke equivalent of suddenly coming over "all girlie").
I've done this for the last 3 winters and managed to get myself 2 pairs of "commuting" jeans for less that £15. This year I went for the extra patch stitched to the inside of the jeans and then wear an old pair of trek shorts, with a pad, underneath them so I don't ruin my sac on the stiffer crotch bit. -

I find the skinny jeans from Uniqlo absolutely fantastic. Not spray-on-jeans tight but still quite nice looking and I only roll them up once and never have any troubles. Quite cheap too and are good quality.
OK now seriously, i like the Topshop "skinny" jeans, costs £30, looks simple and are not suuuper tight.
Ok to ride but doesn't last very long... but which jeans lasts if you cycle a lot with it? :(

Alpkit do waterproof jeans and Edwin did some goretex lined jeans ages ago.

Not true!

What is selvedge?
It's the white band on the end of cloth woven on (usually) narrow looms. Name comes from Self edge, as the process in the loom finishes the edge itself so that it doesn't fray.
Unlike modern wider looms where the edge is finished afterwards.
All of my jeans are from matalan and it probably shows.
