  • as mentioned above. its the rider not the bike. i was on the folder today, i overtook few roadies and couple of ss/fg guys. (fckn folder, got sore knees and back now) miss my proper bike

  • oh slightly OT..does anyone else get sore knees after riding a different bike?

Mine hurt for abt 24hrs after riding a MTB for only an hr or so..

  • financial journalism...fun...(so you are one of those clever people) hee...

I think you are right... I will do a bit more research... i am in no hurry to get on a fixed bike... but generally am interested and think it would be fun to build...

First thing first...where to get a frame? ebay a good place to start?

as to hurt knee pain... what kind of pain do you mean??

  • My fastest commute time across London is 45min for 20k, that's 26kph or 16.5mph.
If you can beat that in town at 7.30 you have an easy commute or are suicidal.

Maybe the NorthSouth traffic is lighter than W-E or you don't have 207 traffic lights in your way?

  • All other things being equal.. weight, aerodynamics, etc.

    Agreed.

  • Yep. Ebay is good. Or send a private message to Roberto or Jos, they can help you.

I doubt I average as high as that, but I know from my speedo that I can pass 30kmh on a long straight bit (which admittedly only ever happens if I cycle to the Wharf).

  • suicidal....:D
golders green to baker street...can reach up to 25 miles all the way (in case you don't know..that stretch of road is down hill all the way....(given all green light.. I am one of the good london commuters that don;'t jump lights...)

  • i would say try and build your own, there is a lot of help if you need it (park tools, Sheldon brown, this place) if your budget is a tight 200 your not getting a track frame unless your lucky, or scraper still has this http://www.londonfgss.com/thread4902.html#post148100

i don't like langster, i think there are better otps for slightly more money and i dont like compact geo.

  • plus there is not traffic through hyde park.....

I got my first frame (which was too slack and too small) for £40 a few years back. Got a new one for about £60 or £70 last year - nice 1970-80 era 8 or 9-speed racing frame, steel, reasonably tight geo (space for fenders, basically), pretty bomb-proof. Don't really see the point in spending top dollar on a track bike except to ride it on the track to be honest, what with the thieves in London...

  • not downhill all the way. its uphill from golders green to the pond in hampstead

  • I need to move house..

  • i dont think thieves are necessarily attracted to ¨track bikes¨..more attracted to ¨shiny bikes¨.

if it looks expensive, it will more likely be nicked..know what i mean..

  • my journey starts at sainsbury.... and go down towards baker street... so it is downhill all the way...

at the hospital where i work... they seem to steal anything.... but I have been told that is should park my bike next to a really nice and shiny bikes... and they can only steal one bike at a time..:P

i don't see you point in context really, so your saying I'm right about track frames, but there are cheaper road frames? so you are basically reiterating me no?

Elaborating upon the point in more detail with examples. Mainly for the benefit of the OP.

  • so 40 pounds for the frame...(first fixed gear... no need for anything fancy)

    something like this??

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BANKRUPT-700C-WHL-ROAD-RACING-BIKE-ALLOY-YELLOW-FRAME_W0QQitemZ170187999346QQihZ007QQcategoryZ22679QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247

or buy a cheap road bike for under 100 and strip it ??

  • i just reread mine, sounded like i was having a go, i wasn't just wondering if i missed something.

  • oh you go that way .. i c.

  • Buy a Langster. Cheap and easy way to see if you like ss/fixed and if not you can sell it to someone so they can cover it in offensive stickers. Just get the right size.

  • whatamidoing..google ¨sheldon brown fixed gear¨ ..

  • What's your average speed going home, uphill, then? :P

cant see the drops/ ends on that if they are vertical then you will have a head ace and ahalf. did you see the link that i posed to a bike some one is selling on the forum, hits your budget, if its your size.

if not then yeah source a cheap road frame strip, and rebuild, if your ok with killing the puppies.

You need an older bike with horizontal rear drop-outs so you can get the chain tensioned - something like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GAZELLE-653-L-WEIGHT-23-ROAD-FRAME-AND-FORKS-HEADSET_W0QQitemZ300214829195QQihZ020QQcategoryZ22679QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Which will probably go for a bit more than £40 - that was a few years back. Inflation and all that.

You could buy an old bike and strip it, but make sure it has the horizontal rear drop-outs.

(Chris - that bike went on Ebay)
