schwalbe blizzard are great tires...cheap and long lasting...BUT don't skid on 'em! went through one in less then a week.

it's a tyre thread.
if you ask for recs you'll get 50 people telling you what they use, from the only tyre they've ever bought and done 3 miles to the hipster club, up to the gnarled old gimmer who's covered a million auadaxes.
see, certain people won't touch contis, despite their expensive ones being decent.
I would have seconded the bontrager hard arses but mine have cracked sidewalls now (probably from the length of time the bike spends outside) and I might like something with nicer ride in the future. -

Conti 4000's or Michelin Krylions.
I've been running Conti's on the Jackson for almost a year now, not one puncture.
The Krylions are on the Serotta and are looking scarred, but also over a year of use on long rides and city commuting. Punctures a couple of times on these in the rain, but the handling and feel of them on a descent makes them worth it. Go for something tougher in the city, but if you want a nice ride these do great.

no need to conform to the logical selection process set out above ^^^...it makes sense, but hey, some kids like turtles. go crazy and go by the colour you want ;)
ive got the cheap rubinos. had it on for about 7mths now and prob done almost 3000kms. loads of cut on the first layer. punctured about twice on each. surprised they actually last this long...they're dirt cheap. but i dont do skids...i use peds for their more superior stopping power

You could buy a pair of practically unused all black Michelin Axial Dynamic 700x23c from me for a tenner!
Great tyres, just I've moved on and now use the 700x25c versions. -

since i switched the amradillos i haven't had a single puncture, and that was over 6 months ago.

Go for brand X - sorted.
Brand X are to be avoided at all costs.
I've been using brand Y, and had a puncture every week for 4 weeks.
Brand Y are the bollocks - good in the wet, haven't punctured in 2000km, resist cuts.
I tried the 2003 version of brand Y and they shredded in no time, but the 2007 version has been much better so far, touch wood.
Just get cheap brand Z. They'll only last 3 months, but at £n a pop, who cares.
Brand Z roll like lead socks, and only come in black.

Rubino pro in front, normal rubino in back.. skids for fun are a bit too expensive for my liking... ;)
Found a big bikeshop that throws out a lot of not that worn tires, so i might reconsider soon, just found a pair of Schwalbe Ultremos, i would guess that they have been used for something like 200 kilometers, i don't think i'll skid on them though, they are very thin and light :)

i'm now sold on tyres with a higher tpi and a supple casing, i don't care if other cheap tyres don't puncture in a zillion miles because the grip and ride quality of armoured dildoes etc is shit. i thought i had underinflated the four seasons when i first put them on as the ride was so smooth and they grip like shit to a blanket.
i don't think i'll buy a cheapo tyre again, it seems odd that people spend hundreds of pounds on frames/components then scrimp on the tyres.

I've worked out what I'm putting on my build, with the only remaining question being what tyres to go for. Does anyone have any recommendations?
I'm probably going to be running 47x17 or 47x19 so we're looking at a huge number of skid patches so not wearing through isn't the primary concern. I'm more interested in traction, puncture resistance, etc. Lower profile tyres would probably be a good call too, as I don't think I've going to have a great deal of clearance at the front (although it remains to be seen - I'll have to see what it's like when I've picked up my wheels).
