  • Is Cycling Weekly rubbish?

On the occasions I have purchased, it seems full of lazy journalism and press releases/wiggle ads disguised as product reviews, with no real insight into the pro peleton...

I wonder what their weekly distribution figures are...

  • The clue is in the name. It's a national weekly publication for Cyclists, not trying to be anything else. I suspect their budget rarely runs to exclusive "insight into the pro peleton". How much is it? less than £3?

Probably wouldn't buy it myself, but it's got to be better than the utter trash that fills most newsagent's lower shelves, OK, Hello, Ugh, Twat, Country Living, Nigella's Arse etc..

  • Now come on.. Nigella's Arse is a literary delight.

  • Now come on.. Nigella's Arse is a literary delight.

    I'd buy that.

  • I actually like it, it's pretty lightweight but has some useful stuff in it from time to time.
I find it a better publication than Cycling Plus to be honest which I think is totally overpriced.
I subscribe and it costs bugger all really.

  • Cycling plus is gash!

  • Cycling Plus occasionally has wonderful photos.

  • I always read the best bit (at the back) first- Dr Hutch. It's not called Cycling Weakly for nothing....

  • Cycling Plus occasionally has wonderful photos.

    and occasionally really scary ones..

  • Like most things in life, if you don't like it don't buy it. It is what it is. The magazine has changed over the last couple of years to reflect a greater interest in sportives. I'm still fan even when I'm in it!

  • I always read the best bit (at the back) first- Dr Hutch.

And then put it back on the shelf and leave the shop.

It's not there to please anybody but the shareholders, and to do that they have to get advertising revenue. Since the people who spend shed loads of money (and are not well served by other publications) are twats who think you need a £5K carbon wonderbike to ride a couple of sportives, CW now directs itself mainly to them so that advertisers have an audience.

  • £5k? You mean I need to upgrade??? Fuck!

  • Yeah, you definitely need Lightweights to ride sportives.

  • I couldn't believe how many riders doing Londres-Paris had Lightweights.

Only £3.5k for a set of Obamayers. I hate that I know this..

  • I think he was putting forward a topic for discussion rather that attempting to validate his opinion to be fair...

  • Not a big Cycling Weekly fan - will buy it from time to time.

Must admit to buying Cycling Plus - I treat it rather like a copy of Heat (not that I read Heat), it's not all that serious and makes the perfect magazine to read while having a shit or taking a bath. Mu concern is that very often items it rates highly are then accompanied 3 pages later by a huge advert from the manafacturer/supplier. Begs the chicken/egg question of what comes first - the review or the advert.

Cycle Sport has the magnificent circulation figures of 17,073 against 35,000 for Cycling Plus.

  • Yep, I don't think there's any decent cycling magazine in the UK. The bike tests are extremely woolly...

I would like to see something like German Tour magazin start circulating in English language format :)

  • Cyclo Sport Ftw

  • Jamie and I are pictured in this weeks comic. It illustrates an article about rude cyclists.. How dare they.. Jamie is punching the air and I'm behind given a V sign. Taken on the Hell of Ashdown. @Cliveo, can we sue for defamation of character or unauthorised use of image?

  • have a 6 month subscription to cycling weekly as a xmas present. Its quite good for some bits - good piece recently on all the upcoming sportives etc but a lot of it is advertorial and they tend to give 9s for most reviews.
not sure I will renew - BikeRadar seems as good and free but will see.

  • my kids endlessly rib me about CW.. asking why am i so absorbed by it at weekends esp after a long ride, completely ignoring them, when it is so boring (their words).. and shocked by the cost of stuff (also their words).. my missus does enjoy reading Dr Hutch though and keeps tabs on how much i spend each month.. and this week there was a rubbish article about domestic bliss which ran for about 3 pages. i read it as light entertainment.

no doubt all hobbies (essentially that is what a majority of cyclists do, including me) that involves abit a self indulgence will always create opinion and sometimes grief

  • A timely response

  • Help Please

I bought a copy of Cycling Weekly last Friday but have left it at home. There is a letter - their letter of the week - which I would like a copy of to send to someone today. Does anyone have a copy that they could scan in?

It is a letter about the possibility of establishing a Cyclists' Mutual Insurance Company which i would like to send on the the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation, with whom I have connections, to see if they can help get the wheels turning on a splendid idea.

    Thanks

    Clive
