  • Oh FFS, please stop quoting that odious bore...

  • Not Ed, obvs...

  • Sorry. I'm still upset about what's happened to the memes thread. I'll be stronger next time, i promise.

  • Jeez, women are capable of sticking up for themselves. They don't need a gormless prick, or some career me-me-me arsehole writing puff-pieces for the Graun to set the world to rights.

    If you want to talk about sexism in the news, why not look at this which actually has some real-world relevance and was written by the whistle blower in question;

    http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/may/20/exposed-richard-scudamore-sexist-emails-premier-league-chief-executive

It's far better articulated and actually goes some way into demonstrating the behaviour in question beyond using Jay-Z getting knocked about in a lift by his sister in law, and if you can't tell the difference in style and content, then you're even more of a nipple than I thought.

  • -1 What is a hipster? Look... 20th May 2014 18:45 Jeez you are a fuckwad for downplaying the serious issue of DV

    I loooled.

Jeez in a nutshell. You're so self-righteous you'd try and prosecute someone who had a sly wank for recklessly abandoning their spermatoza.

  • Sorry. I'm still upset about what's happened to the memes thread. I'll be stronger next time, i promise.

I feel slightly responsible for the memes thread's fall from grace.

  • When have I ever said that I have an issue with wanking?

Given your nature as 'a wanker' that's a good thing as it spares you the self-loathing.

As usual, you are wilfully ignoring anything inconvenient to the bombast that you think makes you some kind of moral champion. Like Farage and his ilk, you excel in creating a straw-man argument that, like Ellen's article, offers little by way of substantiation, context or proof, but delivers copious amounts of conjecture and prolix.

But here you go, you can entertain your solitary brain cell whilst I soak in the bath after thrashing my brother in law at squash.

"However, in my opinion, it would be a mistake to view that video scuffle as in any way comparable, never mind equivalent, to the bulk of male on female violence." Who says that it does? Source? Quote? Statistics-any kind of qualification? You are a journalist after all, and seeing as there's so much out there, it shouldn't be hard to find.

"While there are exceptions, in the majority of cases, FOM violence is different to MOF violence, in myriad ways, ranging from context, scale and intent to self-defence, sexual attacks and death rates." Now that we've established the straw man above, we'll pull a classic Jeez and just try to cover all the bases of stating obvious things whilst acknowledging exceptions.

"It's important to note that what happened in the lift was not domestic violence, which can be suffered by both sexes, albeit predominantly women. (Nobody cited saying that it was?) A woman momentarily lashing out at her brother-in-law at a social event does not count as domestic violence. (Again, who is calling domestic violence?) Perhaps it could have been assault had the bodyguard not intervened. (umm, it was assault, regardless of the intervention). However, even unprotected, would Jay-Z have felt under genuine physical threat from his sister-in-law? (Did he say or anyone else say he felt under threat? He looks pretty fucking non-plussed, as does his wife) Not that women should feel entitled to attack men, but this is a distinction that needs to be made. (eh, this bits hilarious given what you're about to write in the next para). The differences in physical size and/or strength between the sexes mean that most men are simply not physically scared of most women. (again, huge generalisation that has nothing to do with the above and absolutely no qualification)"

"Some females might have periods in their life when they get "slap-happy", primarily when socialising, maybe when attention seeking, usually when drunk (guilty!)." Great way to bring back a celebrity non-event that's been dissected to suit the purposes of whatever media hack wants it to represent and make it about her, but it's nice she recognises she's prone to slapping people to get attention when she's drunk, even if it ridicules her moral authority to be talking about what qualifies 'real' violence.

"As for domestic violence statistics, while there are male victims, who should not be discounted, there isn't the infamous average of two men a week being killed by their partners, as remains the case with women." We'd already established that the topical incident isn't about domestic violence, or apparently didn't even qualify as assault. So we're conflating two very different topics, one of which deserves far better analysis than she is giving it.

"None of this has anything to do with Solange and Jay-Z in the Met ball lift, but that's the point. (There's a point?) Context becomes important when people start pondering simplistically: "Well, what if it had been a man attacking a woman?" and absurdly leave it at that. (According to Ellen this incident isn't even assault, which is absurd, but again, there's no citations of any kind to even demonstrate people have been calling for Solange to be punished or anything of the kind.) In truth, you'd have to take into account obvious physical differences between the sexes generally, and the individuals in particular, not to mention the surrounding culture of patriarchy/entitlement and violence against and subjugation of women. (No shit, really? So the argument you've been making, that the incident in question that has nothing to do with domestic violence, and you haven't shown any evidence to support that anyone of any note has, and the so far un-contested issue that male on female violence is a more serious issue, depends on physical and cultural differences? that's illuminating)

"This is why Solange's attack wasn't disturbing or meaningful in the same way that it would have been if she'd been attacked by a male. (Again, I've not seen anyone saying that it is, she declines to quote anyone that has) Ideally, no one should be attacking someone else (says the woman who gets drunk and pelts guys for attention without fear or reservation). However, the fact that women have always had far more reason to be physically afraid of male violence, rather than vice versa, is hardly news (umm. no, it's not really. Apart from when it frequently is depending on which footballer or public figure has done it. Saatchi, anyone?) While female violence gets a disproportionate amount of attention (again, apart from one, comic, over-hyped non-incident, that she hasn't made any effort to contextualise or support with quotes or analysis from external sources, this is a huge amount of rhetorical hyperbole), it's male violence that remains dominant. (thanks for clearing that up.)

It's a fucking shitbag of an article, even for the Graun, and if this lazy conflation of two entirely separate issues is what you consider as meaningful feminist discourse then you've got pretty strange ideas about what that actually is.

  • Twat.

  • Too much info.
Can someone tell me what to order that will make me look knowledgable, a sophisto, and that tastes good. Preferably something no one has heard of.
If not, something retro that been under the radar that I can nostalgically sip as a reminder of the 80s (Hoffmeister I'm looking at you).

    Thanks

  • Inbetween my time excusing and belittling domestic violence, which is of course a hobby of mine, something has been bothering me about Jeez' rants (and his neg rep).

Who the fuck calls someone a Fuckwad? Is this 1990 and am I in Primary school again?

  • No doubt, though you're such a Flintabbatey Flonatin.

I think the point is, it is possible to know Barbara Ellen is a patronising whiner, without wanting to beat anyone up. One of many ways in which I differ from Solange.
