Modern hip hop which is criticised for being gimmicky and simple is very close to the roots music from which it all evolved. If you go back to ragtime, blues, and hambone stuff. A lot of it is based around gimmicky catchy rhythms, repetitive childish lyrics about sex, getting drunk, drugs etc. It was more about the rhythm, and dancing.

Early hip hop was also just based around the beat, feel good vibes and dancing. The whole politicised angst filled phase of hip hop only really played a small part of the overall evolution. If anything todays hip hop based around minimalist catchy beats like Swizz Beats, the playfullness of JayZ, and the whole massive dance scene based around Audio Push/New boyz etc. Is all as "real" "credible" and "good" as the moody period with people yelling about how gangsta they were.
