DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN is the most revealing thing... some of your DNS providers think the domain does not exist.

But it does, I've checked the root servers.

Virgin Media here - missing images and avatars.

Same issues for me (links and avatars) but think it’s possibly to do with iCloud private relay (if you’ve got that) as looking the above it seems to be affecting Apple devices in the main. And I’ve had trouble with it since yesterday

This is actually Cloudflare Warp which is part of the 1.1.1.1 service but white labelled and repackaged for Apple.

This is a solid hypothesis, as there could definitely be some interesting routing issues here as we're on Cloudflare too.

Firefox/Android/GiffGaff is having the invisible avatar problem, no iCloud. It's only custom avatars which are missing, the geometric generic ones are visible

Windows and Mac on Chrome over ethernet or Wifi from Virgin = problems.

Mobile using Chrome over Virgin wifi = problems

Mobile using Chrome on 5G Vodafone with wifi switched off = works fine.

Mine is off, both on MacBook and iPhone. No avatars or images/links. Virgin.

Oddly, I can see no problems here at all. Everything is showing, nothing looks wrong. Not sure that's helpful--perhaps I have avatars etc. cached or there's a time lag before it falls apart here, too?

Time lag, your DNS servers likely have the lookups cached and those will eventually refresh and break.
