Subtle changes, bugs and feedback

  • I like reading a thread in full before I reply. With the new reply function, I can't open separate edit windows in separate tabs for posts I want to reply to. It only gives me 'javascript:void%200' when I try to right-click or Ctrl-click on 'Reply'. It only takes the back button to go back to where I was in the thread after posting jumps me to the end, but slightly limiting functionality. Part of the reason why I want to open the posts I'm replying to separately is to reduce the number of replies I write, in case someone else has already replied, or to combine several quotes into one post.

  • if you exclude the query, does it allow the anchor through? lfgss.com/conversations/131364/#6012578

That works in Opera*. On WindowsPhone, the anchor is there in the address bar but the browser is failing to jump to it.

    Works on Safari (mac) too.

  • Who are you?

https://www.lfgss.com/profiles/48904/, the man with no name, is horatio

  • Two issues, I've skimmed the above but didn't see them mentioned, so apologies if already covered :
Something has made the next and last buttons disappear behind the post reply box, this happened today and was notate case yesterday. Here is a screen shot.

Secondly, if I want to add a sentence in the middle of a reply, like I wanted to add to the above, I then can't delete what has been typed after, the cursor jumps back and deletes what I just entered no matter where I click. So I find I have to then rewrite the entire reply.

  • Couple of bits of feedback which may or may not have been raised yet.
    1) If you click on a link it doesn't open in a new tab like it used to. This is a crap loss of functionality.
    2) The inability to jump to the last page in a discussion from the main forum pages is an absolute arseache, especially if you're trying to browse the forum on a phone.
    3) The absence of page links at the top of a phone makes this double the arseache on a phone.
    4) The ordering of the fora is absolute mince.

  • Maybe the simplest option would be the reply button automatically quotes the text in the post? Which the replier could then edit.

  • In the glorious olden days of a week ago, usercp would be refreshed every time I clicked on the relevant navigation button. Now "updates" just reloads from cache when I hit the "following" button, so I have to F5 every time to see what is actually new. Same with threads, so when I just F5ed the "updates" and saw that there was a new post in the helmets thread, clicking on the thread title reloaded the page from the cache so I had to F5 that too in order to see the new post.

There is no cache on the API.
There is no cache on the web pages.
The updates page is not cached.
Any collection you see on any page is not cached.

The caching strategy of Microcosm is only ever to cache single items (one comment) and never to cache any collection (a page that lists things... such as the updates page).

We even send API headers to say to the client (the web app you're using) to never ever cache anything.

Then we send headers from the web app, saying that the web pages should never ever be cached.

I think the only place where anything should be remembered by the browser is that files are aggressively cached (images, avatars, etc), and that redirects (old vBulletin URLs) are 301'd (permanently moved).

Nothing is cached... any other behaviour your browser is doing and you have control over via your browser settings.

  • Why not put the 'conversations' button in the bar at the top with:
    Forums [Conversations] Trending Following People?

    Not happening.

Would you want me to add one for Events too? Classifieds (when they come)? Polls? Reviews? and so on.

Instead a single "Today's Posts" will give the last 24 hours mix of everything that is new. That will be put in the nav bar.

We may replace the Trending with this, for signed-in users.

It might not be obvious, but the navbar is already full. One item is presently not rendered but will be soon.

  • Another thing is that you currently can't reply to your own posts, but shouldn't it be possible to do that to link a follow-up, e.g. 'I said this above, but now I think that it's not true'?

The edit button is there for a reason :)

  • Its likely a concern of mine rather than a general feeling but the rider down subforum is now less visible than it used to be. Would you be willing to move it up the highrachy?

The forums are sorted by comment count.

But it's possible to sticky some forums above the others... though those are also sorted by comment count.

Rider Down is already sticky. In fact, everything above Miscellaneous is already sticky.

CTRL+Click the permalink in the top right corner of a comment instead.

It will open that comment in a new tab, and give you a reply box directly below it.

  • 2) The inability to jump to the last page in a discussion from the main forum pages is an absolute arseache, especially if you're trying to browse the forum on a phone.

If you are signed-in, then the title already takes to you /newest/ which is the first unread post.

    3) The absence of page links at the top of a phone makes this double the arseache on a phone.

It's on the bugtracker, will be done Monday or Tuesday.

    4) The ordering of the fora is absolute mince.

Yeah, it's by popularity but on-topic stuff is above niches and off-topic... turns out people are into Bikes & Bits.

  • David, it's 10.30pm on Saturday after the biggest week of your life. Go away and get some rest. You've done well, and the future will be better.

  • Somewhere, out there, bugs are happening.

  • Who are you?
lfgss.com/profiles/48904/, the man with no name, is horatio

Following that link went to Horatio's profile, and then redirected me to the homepage and logged me out.
    Safari on iPad iOS 7.
    Bloody annoying.

  • why is it keeps refreshing every second? had to press stop on browser manually to post this.

  • ^this. Endlessly refreshing pages - you have to stop the browser to be able to scroll/navigate anywhere.

  • It has just started doing that to me too, on Firefox

Switched back to Opera and it has stopped.

  • Jesus, now I have constantly refreshing pages. I'm having to type this in Notes and then paste it in, hoping to beat the clock.

  • Nothing is cached... any other behaviour your browser is doing and you have control over via your browser settings.

That's easy for you to say, but I haven't changed any browser settings since last week.

  • I've a had no problems until now, but it's just started doing the constant refresh thing.

  • This answers the question without resolving my concern. Rider down will therefore always be ranked below the other popular forums as it's traffic is lower than, for example, bikes and bits.

Can it be bumped higher than it currently is?

I'm really not bitching, I just think its one of the more important areas of content on the forum and should be ranked as such.

Please tell me to bugger off if you disagree.

  • I don't disagree, but we haven't built in a way to do exceptions like that.

However, what is missing is the extended navbar as seen over here: http://forum.islington.cc/ ... on the navbar where it says Islington Cycling Club.

I'm happy to put Rider Down in there, I'll be adding that very soon.

  • I've a had no problems until now, but it's just started doing the constant refresh thing.

    Has it stopped?

I was trying to stop it for everyone, but triggered it for everyone for a short while instead.

  • Nope. Tried restarting the browser. Maybe there's some cache thing.
