Subtle changes, bugs and feedback

  • I've changed something... guess what it is.

    an instant hipster generator!

  • This one is for the linux and LAMP geeks out there: I've replaced memcached with xcache. memcached is better at distributing a cache over many servers, xcache is both op-code cache and variable cache. Whilst memcached is better at distributing cache over many servers, we only have the one server, so by moving from memcached to xcache exclusively, we take advantage of the speed gain of not having to support a distributed cache. Result? More pages are being served per second as the response is faster, as reading from xcache is a quicker operation than reading from memcached. And I can also now uninstall memcached which frees up a little server resource.

  • Oh, and I re-factored the "reputation" system into a "comments" system.

  • Is the way that pictures are displayed from attachments (in the same window and not just a link to it in a new tab when you click it) new at all?

    I like it

  • It's new... mentioned on the page before this.

  • VB: Can you add a quick delete for PMs?
It's a pain having to read one of RPMs love letters, then check a box and then click the delete button.
A multi-delete in the main list would be nice (it might be there already but I'll have a look)

    Ta!

  • Notice period... I'm going to add a little something so that you can see who left what tag.

Now, why the notice period? Well if you've been a jerk in the tags, you have a week or so in which to perhaps edit the ones that you know might drop you in it.

The addition will be in the form of hover text... hover over a tag and it will say "Added by X".

  • I like that addition VB

  • VB. good idea, but maybe you should wait a couple of weeks, been more vociferous than usual on the forum recently, and it might cause more ructions if people know whose been a twat when it comes to tagging threads.
Also you might want to do a bit more of a heads up, as I'm pretty sure some people will be surprised by their sudden tag outage...

  • What more of a heads up could they need? Are you implying that everyone uses the tags to put cowardly but scathing messages to other people? Heaven forbid!

    ;)

I'm pretty sure the word will get around swiftly enough.

  • Good move.

  • I can tell you I wrote "31trum's a wanker" at the bottom of this hahaha

  • this will be fun!

  • I can't remember what I've written; but I know a lot of them are about Hippy.

this is going to end in tears. There's been so much shit on the forum these last 2 months, this'll be fuel on the fire IMO.

Must the tagger go to each thread to edit/delete?

Or is there an easy way to see every tag you've created?

  • I am a little uneasy about this though; if an anonymous system is to be made public there really ought to be a more noticeable announcement made than just a new post in this thread.
I agree with stopping some of the hateful tags but not at the risk of 'outing' people and causing even more arguments.

Have you been saying things that you are ashamed of then?

  • Have you been saying things that you are ashamed of then?

Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist party?

  • Have you been saying things that you are ashamed of then?

Didn't know you could create tags until two days ago.

Just wondering if there was an easy way out for the serial deflamatory tagger.

But shame on them, and I hope there's not.

Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist party?

Only when I was in the Air Force.

  • Are you implying that everyone uses the tags to put cowardly but scathing messages to other people?

on the contrary. people use tags in many different ways. If forumengers wanted to post directly to an individual it would be said in thread, to that person. If they want to pass comment on a thread, or an idea without getting embroiled for example, then tags are used.

    example:

search for the tag "cock". 4 threads, 1355 posts. Any forumenger could use this tag to start a hate campaign on the tagger based on the fact that the poster thinks that the tagger was talking about him/her specifically. Most of the time this wouldn't happen, but there's been a spat of action/reaction recently and this ain't gonna help.

so the more I think about this the more I think this is a very bad idea.

  • this is sure going to be interesting. right, i have some tags to delete...

  • I am a little uneasy about this though; if an anonymous system is to be made public there really ought to be a more noticeable announcement made than just a new post in this thread.
I agree with stopping some of the hateful tags but not at the risk of 'outing' people and causing even more arguments.

Tags were launched on the 1st April 2008:
    http://www.londonfgss.com/post137782-1.html

And on the 6th April 2008 the possible misuse of them was raised:
    http://www.londonfgss.com/post141309-19.html

And on the 7th April 2008 I stated that the attribution may well be made public, that I favour transparency, and that only Private Messages can ever be considered private:
    http://www.londonfgss.com/post141407-26.html

    And I quote:

And tags are not anonymous. vBulletin does store who tagged what thread and when. Aside from PM's (which will never be looked at or touched in any way by me ever) all other data on this site I'm quite up for surfacing in some way, I like transparency. So it may well be that when you view tag search results it says something like "tagged by VelocityBoy" or whatever. People should not think that tags are anonymous.

That's pretty clear, always has been.

Only Private Messages are anonymous... everything else can (and eventually probably will) be opened up.

  • You know... I wouldn't be needing to think of doing this if a lot of people who have been absolutely childish recently could just grow the fuck up, chill the fuck out, stop taking polarised/fanatical viewpoints, consider things from other peoples perspective and shit like that... which honestly, I don't really feel I should have to write here.

  • Ahh the good old days when "hippy is fast" just outsized (puntastic) "hippy is fat" in the tag cloud..
