get the tension on your chain up from Slack(TM) and you shouldn't throw it.

makes sense, skipping is like the first powerful part of a skid over and over again combined with a bouncing motion.
If you have:
good chainline
good condition 1/8 drivetrain. (not that 3/32 should have issues)
No reason for any problems.

Dumbass question but would someone explain how a skip stop works?

From reading this thread, I am coming to the view that it does not.
Are you coming out in RP with us sometime soon?

You skid, until you stop ?
why? don't you? haha!

Just repeat the first juicy bit of a skid many times in succession, in sort of bouncing motion by weighting & unweighting the back pedal.
It stops you faster than a long skid as there is more weight on the back wheel while it is locked, and because of the backward pedalling.
Still no replacement for a brake though.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight so all I have to learn how to do is repeat bunny hop whilst in motion. I might drop my GI down a little then. I think 82 is a wee bit high for this manouvre
@Cliveo, yep for sure mate, but off to South Africa next Wednesday for 3 weeks so it'll be in the New Year...once I've spent 3 weeks MTBing in the sunshine...tra la laaaaa

No, I tried once and my bike exploded in a small nuclear fission type ball of dust and bad things.
@DFP - Your talking rubbish again. That's one of those weird bounce skids.
Im not sure upon the perfect terminology for this 'bounce skid' but I saw other doing it, even asked here about it. Then practiced it and found it to work extremely well.
If that is not skip - stopping, what is? You see the name being thrown about a lot, so its gotta be something fairly obvious.

if you try to do a bunny hop it wont work.
You have to push down and let the 'bounce' unweight you. Difficult to put in words, but very very easy once you figure it out.

@Littigator, where in SA you going? Just got back from a 3 week stint in CT. All great, apart from getting the radio nicked out of my hire car.

skipping is reisting the motion of your wheel to the point just before it locks up, then realsing, then resisting again ad nausem untill you stop. it works a bit better then skidding as you do not lose traction.

Have a good trip and see you on your return.
Cheers mate, will do.

Flying into Cape Town, then 2 weeks in Knysna then finishing back in Cape Town for a wedding. Can't wait!

That's about the best description so far, I think I know what I'm aiming for and have tried a couple of times but I think my high GI makes it a lot more difficult to achieve. I'll be switching back to about 70 for the RP rides so will try with that

I did my first (and unintentional) skid last week in RP when a dog jumped out in front of me. Perfect stop. I doubt that I could repeat it. Will stick to brakes.

Epic skid stop fail on my way to work this morning.
I'm bombing down Parkway towards Camden Town tube station when the lights at the Arlington Rd intersection **suddenly **turn amber. No problem, I think, it's an opportunity to execute a stylish skid stop. What do you mean? That they didn't fade to amber like normal? You're going fast downhill on a busy road which is dangerous at the best of times, with no front brake and the lights changing take you by surprise. It's not your chain line that needs working on.

Especially in the current weather conditions. I find that skidding makes worryingly little difference to my speed on damp roads, even with bum firmly on the saddle. Still too lazy to fit a brake and too stupid to ride slowly though. Although there are no hills on my commute.

Owned.
Welcome back wiganoutwill. :)
that suggests to me that your chainline might be out.
When my chainline was out by a small amount, my chain would pop off no matter how tight if I tried a proper fast skid.
Now that the chainline is good, I can have a completely slack chain and it always stays put.
