Get over to Brooklyn during the day, stay big in the city at night. Broadway has a few good jibs off the side street some big hubbas and a lot of Marble in the business district, the docks have a few good spots, pretty much every rail is smaller than in england

my login is the same on the nyc forum, which i found out accidentally after requesting a password and never hearing back from them. worth a shot...
as for skate spots, you need this: http://www.officialnewyork.com/spots/
there used to be one that was even better, but i can't remember what it was - haven't lived in nyc since '05. but have fun... -

Calver hit up Chelsea there's the Chelsea Lodge or something, it's a good hostel although top floors have no air con so get ready to sweat. Think it was about $10 a night so cheap as chips. The local bar 'Rawhide' cetainly is an eye-opener.

I have been doing this for years. Save a lot of money and you get to see the city from a different perspective.

Hit up Brooklyn Jack for brunch and bars. Trackstar is nice and there's a really nice roadiescum bike shop round the corner from the UN.
Central Park is nice at the weekend, when they close the roads to traffic.

You just register and wait. The admin approves all memberships, so you just have to give it a bit of time for him to check them.

I had to wait ages for the Chicago forum but for the NYC forum you need an invitation code so you need to find someone who'll give you one first.

Ah right. I just checked... I have none. He's probably got it wired up so that only those who are actively posting get invites. So cliquey!

Hi i'm going to be in newyork in august and would love to ride a fixed around manhattan just wondered if any one had any mates/contacts that could hook me up? happy to rent only want one for a few hours/day nothing major!
i could buy one and bring it back!!!!! ummm how will i explain that one!

I don't think it's that hard to take a bike over there, really! You could take over one, sell it while you're there, buy a new one and bring it back (claiming it was yours).

I couldn't find anywhere that did fgss rentals when I was there this spring. That having been said, there's nothing to stop you flinging your own bike in a box and taking it over there.
NYC is awesome to ride - Manhattan's pretty compact and the fact that practically everything's one-way makes it really easy to get used to the way the traffic flows.

pipe lagging + bubble wrap + bike bag = should be ok.

The bike shop on East 17th and Union hires out SS, and has a heap of fixed bikes too. Its somewhere indexed in the old forum, so i guess a hunt for NY will find it eventually.
And by the power of google:
http://www.manhattanvelo.com/renting.htmBut as they say ^^^, take a beater, buy a new one, leave beater behind.

yeh i m off to nyc mid july (cousin's getting married in toronto so i m using it as an excuse). plan to take bike wrapped in bubbles. first have to get it back from tokyo this afternoon though. can you take a frame on as hand luggage? maybe just stick it down my trousers.
-
• #48
I was actually thinking about renting whilst there and buying a new frame or get one made!!!!
So if I bring one back (and didn't take it out) I will have to declare it at customs???

get yourself to paragon sports over at union sqr. when i was there a month ago, they had the new schwinn madison for $500...pretty good package. they also had the cannondale's alu track bike and the cheapo swobo ones.
i wouldnt worry bout the customs thing...but make sure your bike looks used, just in case.

If you time it right, you could get New York State organic mud from the Union Square food market on a Friday (i think) to smear all over it!
Do they not check your flight manifest thing to see what luggage you had when you arrived in the first place? I've been checked with guitars in teh past - but have also brought lots home with me that I've bought over there. I just posted the receipts home in advance.
Union Sq is actually a bit of a let down, mostly just fruitbooters and Free Tibet protesters. I'd reccomend going to bowery in downtown, theres lots of good bike shops, and quite a lot of the messengers hang out there.
