I'm reading his book Bicycle Diaries... very good so far.

I hope I can get away with hijacking this thread (as an impatient newbie) . . .
I've just got my first frame and it needs building from scratch. I'm off to New York soon and thought I could take advantage of the exchange rate and add some parts to my hand luggage. If you were going, what would you get for your bike?
-
• #154
Thomson, Chris King, Swrve... All much cheaper there... That was when the dollar was worth only 50p tho'...
-
• #155
It's at 64p now, so not too bad. I'm guessing shops like King Cog and Trackstar are worth a visit, although I'll probably be laughed out of them - not having a clue!
-
• #156
I heard rumours that Trackstar was just a workshop now, dunno if that's true... I wasn't that impressed with King Cog when I was last there but they've got a much bigger store now so might be OK... Don't forget Chari & Co, Affinity and Brooklyn Machine Works...

well i am from America, just arrived recently, had a friend that is from here bring my bike. Virgin allows your bike in a box for free. and they never asked any questions. but the place to go would be http://www.kingkog.com/v2/about-kingkog
or i can ask around some of my friends from back home the other cool places to go.i think you can get stuff back here from the states with no worries. i think at least. i never had any problems.and it would be cheaper for you to take advantage of the exchange rate. i will dig some more for you if need be. -

Cool, thanks guys I'll check them out

Only managed to visit Chari & Co. but it was well worth searching them out . . .
we even turned up on their blog, my girlfriend patiently waiting while I asked lots of stoopid questions!
They were very patient with me and I learnt a lot, but not how to keep my money in my pocket! I bought a blue lug saddle and Nitto bars . . .
Thanks again, I'll be back to ask lots more daft questions when I gather the rest of the parts I need!
Cheers,
Simon

Wasn't sure whether to put this here or in Misc, feel free to move it if needs be Hippy or Velocio
For years now it's been Mrs Stevo's New Year's Resolution to go to New York but we haven't been able to afford it. It's our 5 year anniversary coming up and I want to surprise her then with tickets to New York, to actually go on her birthday in November.
Now, I have no idea what I'm doing and have been looking for months. I don't want a 'budget' flight as I want the flight to be at least bearable. I don't have shed loads of money to spend but I still don't want to stay in a hostel as I want to treat her and in my mind that doesn't include sharing a bathroom with strangers.
I have seen a Virgin Holiday which includes return flights on Virgin Atlantic and 4 nights in a hotel for £1,400 for both of us. Is this ludicrously expensive?

I recently booked New York for 10 days this June with Lastmin, flying with Virgin. £800 each so it seems like you could save relatively if you stay longer but it's getting there that costs you p.

flights are winding me up. one their own, they cost more for a short trip and are cheaper if you go for a whole week!
4 days apart = £1200
1 week apart = £400someone explained it's cos they think you're a business traveller if you go for a few days and a tourist if you go for a week or more.
problem is if you get the cheaper week apart flights you end up spending more on spending money and accom

Hippy, those threads appear to have more info on this new fangled fixie skidding lark than what I was asking about.
-
• #169
Which is why your thread wasn't merged and I merely pointed you to some NY threads to read.

Steveo
have a look at booking an apartment rather than a hotel, probably cost you less for the week than a hotel and you'll also be able to afford the cheaper week long flight. Also would make you feel like a real new yorker, hitting the midnight deli and so forth.
Have a look online and i'll ping an email to a friend stateside to see if it is actually cheaper...
Also have words with Aram and Jenne they may know someone who can sort you out, also Jenne needs someone to bring back her roadbike so you could maybe sort out a quid pro quo... -

I'd recommend kayak.co.uk for searching for flight prices. AA tend to come out pretty competitive for London to New York, and they're decent to fly with.

• #173
Thanks for the tip about kayak, Mattty. Looks good.
