  • bah I'm jealous... won't be at easts till Jan 2011 ... god ...

  • Going to try for this week's easts as next term I'll be working wednesday nights until mid march!

Cake you going to be there?

  • Still hoping to make it but unlikely to be there before 8

  • I might come...

  • It's the ill-fated week before christmas drinks. Avoid!

  • Don't think i'm going to make it...

See all of you in the New Year. Have a good Xmas and a safe and happy new year xxx

  • It's the ill-fated week before christmas drinks. Avoid!

Sure that you don't want to go? I'll buy you a drink (the week after)

I don't know what was funnier, you turning up or the week after the way you talked about it.

  • well me and bigben think that easts folk are lame for not being here by now.
    get to the pub.

  • LFGSS pub quiz team is currently me...
... a little help here guys?

    Guys?

  • I've had to work late. Sorry. :(

  • well the quiz pot is 80 quid and I joined a team with someone who's on the forum but isn't here for east drinks. How very serendipitous.

  • I wanted to come tonight but only got home from work now : (
See ya'll in the new year!

  • We came 2nd...
    ... to last.

    BQ, needed your face-quizzing skills.

  • Russell, nice to meet you sorry not to have stayed for the quizz, but then as I said I tend to dissapear early anyway.

Thoughts on Easts new home, not positive for me I'm afraid but I may well be in a minority of one (not unusual).

I come out to east drinks to meet friends and talk shit, mostly about cycling, what I don't do is come out to east drinks to play a pub quiz game. Each to their own but utterly not my bag. I'm not going to be around much next term anyway as I'll be teaching an evening course but for me forum beers is not about "hey everyone lets go to the pub every week and play a quiz game" and if I'm the only one who feels that way totally cool, but I wonder if I am or am not alone on this? The staff are indeed a lot friendlier than TRIOTP but I won't be around much.

Thoughts on whether the quiz night is a plus or minus?

    Have a happy christmas y'all.

  • Well normally I get there around 6.30 and the quiz is not till 8.30... so 2 hours to talk shite... also we were talking all sorts of junk though the quiz (for the first 3 I went to). Not really sure there is a problem ?

It's just nice to have a bunch of options, and the fact that we've actually made money from the quiz helps (free beer ftw!)

  • Last night wasn't an option for me, soz.
Had to stop in and look after my better half this week.

But yeah, Ben's right, drinking and talking bollocks is what Easts is about. the quiz is just a nice little distraction that provides drinking money if we win. Pizza, bike policy and back garden are definite plusses though. At least the back garden will be when it's warm enough to stay out there and smoke a cigar or two.

Might be ok to come next week. We shall see.

  • hi big ben et al,

you are not a minority of one.

i am not keen on the current arrangements.

yes for one the quiz is a downer. if people want to do lfgss quiz team fine but dont hijack easts to do it.

and secondly the sovereign is too far north. it is more like a north easts get together.

the inn on the park was originally settled on / chosen / popular because it was kind of central to inner east, outer easts, the docks and those in hackney and stokey etc. (and had railings, bikes out back ok, real fire in winter, park in summer, good jukebox, food etc etc).

now i am not saying we go back to the royal inn on the park but please can we move it back to somewhere in east london or go back on tour. (although i would not be anti a return to the royal inn).

    that is my two penneth.

i miss easts but at the moment it is too much of a trek for me to attend regularly for a couple of ales (or sometimes more).

and merry christmas and if i cant make the 29th happy new year.

  • I think we should give The Britannia another go when the weather is nice again, the one with the massive beer garden + bbq on victoria park.

  • The thing is, since we moved from the Royal Inn loads more people have been coming out every wednesday. Most popular (from memory) have been the Captain Kidd, the Sov and the Hemingway.

You have to go off the beaten track a bit it seems, in order to find a pub which is both good but also empty on a wednesday evening. I liked the Britannia, the Approach and the Hemingway, all of which are a short distance from the RIOTP but the Sov is way better than any of them, and worth riding a bit north for. It's only a little way up from Hackney central. If it's not worth going just for a couple of drinks, try arriving before 10:30 :-)

No-one complains that Souths is too far south, or that Wests is too far west. We did go too far east once :-)

I'm not averse to going back on tour, but just at the moment I am working too hard and have too much evening stuff (and it is too cold) to want to go out scouting pubs on other nights. I definitely plan to do a summer residence at the Captain Kidd.

  • I'm always up for a going to the Kidd. Great pub.

  • I think its good if Easts has a settled home, the questions is surely where that home should be, how about a poll?

  • As Quinn said... since east moved to the current place, the turn out has been a lot higher.

Whats the point of having it at an "east" pub if hardly anyone comes ? :)

  • Its since I stopped attending......

I 'm not even an eastie but the current pub has good food and the quiz is just a way to get free beer. But I like the touring as I like going to new pubs/experiences.

  • it is not just me that thinks the sov is too far north. others have commented to me as well.

i think it is helpful if we all try and stay general and helpul. it detracts if people start to get make personal side swipes.

what we all should be seeking to acheive is a compromise that is acceptable to the majority but does not exclude or sideline any minority.

and i would have thought the best way to do that is place easts in a central east location and not on the edge.
