Turbo Trainer Advice

  • I can still do a flatish TT as an 'up and under'. Varying my effort to suit my hatred of continous threshold stuff.

    What I do outdoors is 2 x 20 on a 7% gradient Climb.

Doing the same on the turbo is kind of inbetween. The flywheel isnt big enough to allow for much soft pedalling. But it allows more than a Climb. Which is why hill training on a turbo isnt the best unless you can crank up the resistance. Mine has a mountain setting for just this.

  • I can smash 30 second sprint Level intervals forever.

Either you're waiting days between them or not trying hard enough. Do it again!

  • I read someone that when doing 2 x 20 intervals you could as much time to recover after the first before starting the second.

Currently up to 2 years, 3 months, 4 days and about 2 hours so far.

  • I skipped the 'off' bit during last nights 2x30 so I could get dinner sooner. #priorities

  • This. Not trying hard enough by a long shot. If you don't want to be sick in a bucket after 10 you are doing it wrong - or resting too long between.

  • I've never spewed. I only ever get a metallic taste and then red out or white out and have to lie down a while. But it has been a long time since I was doing anything 'hard'. Now it's all long stuff. Obviously I'd still decimate the local track leagues.. ;)

  • I've never actually spewed either, I've been a bit sick in my mouth in races and been pretty close to it after sprint intervals and doing man 1 starts. Not trying hard enough.

  • I do 15 sprints. If I'm honest they alternate between smashing it, and holding on.

But what I meant was that I dont find them mentally tough indoors, and mentally I could just keep doing them. Not something my body will do of course.

  • I think some people are chuckers and some aren't. The once yearly hill climb is about as close as I come to sprint intervals these days. None of the riders on my commute are fast enough to push me :)

  • They are a bit more exciting than doing 8 hours steady state.

  • They are a bit more exciting than doing 8 hours steady state.

Surely only a lunatic would do such a thin- oh.

  • Last night feeling a bit stuck in as it was pissing down I sort of wanted a turbo so I could "ride" while watching a movie in the warm.

Does anyone have experiences with the bargain basement £40 type things? Are they mega awful?

If you are spending more how much more is the next decent step up? Have seen rollers for £100ish but you have to balance more and watch films less with that.

    Just looking for ideas atm.

  • I purchased this here from either wiggle or CRC 2 years ago in a January sale for £70 free post.
The roller was quite rough at first, I've always used old tyres so I didnt really care about it eating the rubber. 5 levels of resistance with "real life on a flat" sitting between level 2 and 3 at about 25mph.
Stability wise, its fine sitting down, but you dont want to do out of saddle efforts.
Noise - would be annoying to another person in the room, but otherwise fine.
2 years on, the roller where the tyre sits has worn smooth (gets about 4 hours use a week between late autumn and spring) so the wheel slips with hard acceleration, just annoying when doing intervals, otherwise it functions as new.
Weakest link - the plastic ring used to lock the screw mechanism the holds the axle. When I first got it I thought it was going to break within a couple of months. I've been careful with it and its lasted.
Just about tightens enough for narrow SS hubs... might be an issue if you have shallow nuts. grips the road bike much better than fixed.
Dont forget a riser of some kind, you neck will be grateful.

  • @Yukirin is it being decent enough really brand specific or is that just what you get for a £60-100 trainer. Are there brands to avoid like the plague?

I'm guessing atm the planetx cheapo one would be something I would look at, looks a little more ugly but similar. Being christmas soon the decathlon one could be an easy option to say to someone.

  • Looks similar, but my one is my only experience of trainers I've had.

  • My girlfriend currently has the turbo below but is looking for something quieter. She doesn't want to spend much more than £150. I'm assuming a fluid trainer might be a good idea. Any recommendations?

Yeah elite fluids are great. Get the super though. More resistance!

  • In market for a turbo. Need it to be as quite as possible as I live in a 2nd floor flat; do they HAVE to have a special tyre? Can they take 120mm spaced hubs (missus is keen and she has TFG dream machine)? Should I be looking at direct drive trainers? Budget is about £300; £350 max. I will be using them with powermeter, USB ANT+, trainerroad set up.

  • No they don't need a special tyre, but its a good idea.
    Yes many can take 120.
DD are fucking expensive, but could be good- I particularly like the Elite Muin.
I suggest the Elite/cyclops Fluid thingy that I use. Its excellent, maybe a little loud, but neither of my flatmates complain when its on.

    (doesn't mean I don't want a kickr)

  • Those Wahoo Kicker things look really good, but if that's a stretch price wise then I have a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine and it's brilliant. Quiet (ish), solid and feels realistic. I just use my road tyres.

  • I would like a Kickr, but first I need them to reduce the price by 75%.

I suspect that I shall be waiting for a long time.

  • Alright if no direct drive then what is the most compact when it comes to storage? Or are the about the same? What are the thoughts on Jetblack Whisperdrive?

  • elite fluid power

  • This?

so I need a spare rear wheels with the trainer tyre, cassette and chain?
