Turbo Trainer Advice

  • yes, you're obliged to say that - you spent the money. As far as I'm concerned - ignorance is bliss...

I've got a trainer that cost £50, one that cost £200 and one that cost £500 (and about to get another one that costs 500 because I don't like the first one that cost 500).

The old fifty quidder has a slightly feeble mount and can be a bit on the slippy side. The expensive one generates its own load. Wow! Le snore...

Everything else about their end result is the same.. they're shitty indoor alternatives to riding your bike but allow you to do it without leaving the house, or allow you to hit intensities that might be hard to do without interference from outside.

I'd still be sweating all over the £50 one if I wasn't a compulsive ebayer.
Should've spent my money on PEDs.

  • the only negative I have to say about mine is - it sometimes creaks, but I'm usually too busy crying and thinking about beer to to notice. The nice thing about having a cheap one is that I can leave it outside (but covered) and not worry much about ruining something expensive.

  • My cheap one is with the club. I only bought the JetFluid so I could have one at home and one at the clubrooms.

  • I have the cycleops magneto version and that's pretty much as quiet as the fluid one......which is irrelevant when you have a BB30 bottom bracket.

They were going a good bit cheaper than the fluid ones not long ago. Worth a look.

    ?

  • I've lost a bit of weight since your pic was taken.

  • Just get cycleops and use speed. Ignore the watts, it's irrelevant.

Well turbo trainer speed is pretty irrelevant sounding to a noob like me. But I get the point. No use in extrapolating data, just to change the units.

I guess i want to hit 27kph, at 80rpm for the most part. Then I'm in good shape for the climb. Simples.

yes, you're obliged to say that - you spent the money. As far as I'm concerned - ignorance is bliss...

This is true of everything though. Stuff gets more expensive with ever decreasing real world improvement. Somewhere on this curve the purchase desire is over shadowed by wallet pain.

I definitly dont want an adjustable magnetic one though. Having gears is enough to think about for me.

Here's a mind-bogglingly dull link to an hour of zone 2 work on the turbo that I did yesterday.

What you can see there is a ten minute warm-up followed by a 50 minute low intensity spin.

The wattage and speed are linked for the duration of the 50 minutes- 17mph @ 219 watts.

So, as BMMF says, once you know what speed is what wattage you can use that to train to.

Bugger all use out on the road of course, however.

This is exactly what I want to do. A fluid trainer seems the least complicated way of doing this.

I like the idea of the powercal for riding. I'm not a great user of realtime data TBH. Frankly ride time is precious. I'd rather look at trees. But going over ride data in the evening, is pretty interesting, and has really improved my cycling. The one reason I might wear a PowerCal for turbo work. Would be to make looking back at training sessions together with rides, nice and simple.

  • Adjustable one is fine I find. Keep chainline straight and adjust the resistance.
To be honest, I rarely ramp the resistance up much - trying to improve leg speed and efficiency so keep cadence high. Plus, I really don't see the point of trying to simulate 'climbs' on a turbo - seems pointless leg pressing at low cadence when you could just do off the bike strength stuff or do some hill reps ( at least your technique would improve). I really just use the turbo as a time efficient way of working specifically on threshold or vo2 efforts without fuss and getting used to managing efforts.

  • Plus, I really don't see the point of trying to simulate 'climbs' on a turbo.

    I see what you mean.

I'd like to simulate the cadence, and power, under stabile conditions. Just to get a feel for it, and see what sort of time I should be aiming for. It'd be tricky to do this outside. For the most part I'll probably do DVDs etc.

As for the adjustability thing. Basically, I really like the idea of using my gears.

  • I just bought mine for the awesome colour.

  • I just bought mine for the awesome colour.

Based on RRPs that looks like the best chioce for what I want. But I'm being financially raped, spit roast style, by an electrician, and a plumber at the moment. So the extra cost isnt going to happen.

Vanilla bikes have the funky looking Rock'n'roll at a great price. Its pretty big though.

  • The R&R has a massive footprint. I considered buying it but decided to go for simplicity instead. I knew I was going to keep the thing and wanted the most indestructible, reliable looking trainer that I could find.

Did we already cover buying 2nd hand?

The R&R has the same resistance unit. So the upgrade to a moving frame is bit much IMHO. I have rollers for flapping side to side indoor on.

The usual problem of postage is killing my second hand hunt. Norwegian post is as overpriced as it is shite. So buying from say oslo, isnt much different from the UK.

  • Not considered the postage. They are heavy old things.

Well the best I can do locally is £170 Tacx Satori (with some extra bits). Which I would have had to buy yesterday.

So its being posted regardless. Which makes the rock and roll very tempting, as Vanilla offer free postage based on the cost.

    First honest LFGSS answer.

Will you delete the whole forum now?

  • Not delete but I will merge everything into a single thread called "WAC".

  • except for that one post?

  • SF can you get cycleops TTs where you are at a decent price? My cycleops magneto model has no adjutsment, it's a progressive magnetic one if you want the simplicity of the the fluid ones a bit cheaper. And they're all solid. I wanted KK one but too costly.

If you really want some fancy way to measure your progress instead of using speed maybe look at using trainer road.

Its just the Fluid 2 thats a nice price.

The KKs sound better on all counts. Unfortunatly not £110 better.

  • Sounds like the fluid 2 is your best option.

My choice at the time came down to those ^ two. I was feeling flush at the time so got the KK.

If I was buying now, I'd probably cripple my credit card and buy that fancy gizmo that dammit posted.

From what I read, the resistance ramp, and wind down feel better on the KK. So its nice if you can go the extra. But for my needs the Fluid 2 sounds more than enough. All those none rear wheel ones are for Shimano users. Bloody racists.

Been browsing sufferfest videos already. Once the workers are finished I'll clean out the big workroom, and build a paincave.

    Looking into this now cheers.

Already using Ant+. So I just need to sign up. Seems like a nice enhancement to the sufferfest vids.

  • Which hill are you actually going to climb? TW2 mentioned something in Norway.
